Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder, not
the transcriber, or is used to call your attention to additional information
in the transcriber's notes.
? Indicates a letter or number which could not be determined due to the
condition of the manifest or handwriting of the original recorder.
Note that every passenger with the same last name, which follows another passenger with
the same last name, always is listed with the same occupation. This is true even for the
very young infants. The infants and young children should probably have been listed as such.
However, they are listed on this passenger list with the same occupation as the apparent
bread winner of each family or group with same last name.
Handwriting through out PAX Manifest is very hard to read.
1 Has u umlaut 2nd letter last name.
2 Has u umlaut 2nd letter of country.
3 Has u umlaut 2nd letter of country.
4 Has u umlaut in last name.
6 Occupation of this passenger, and many below him, is Oeconom. This is the
German word for small farmer.
10 first name appears to be Christ.
19 First name appears to be Pal. Occupation for this passenger, and many other
single female passengers, appears to be Sarfis. Their actual occupation may have
been Servant or Service. The German pronounciation for the letter "v" in English
sounds like "f".
24 & 25 occupation appears to be dressmaker but its just misspelled.
26 Written as Kook probably meant cook.
27 & 28 Has u umlaut 2nd letter last name.
29-30 Occupation written as Butscher but probably meant butcher.
29-31 Destination written as Missican, however, assume he meant Michigan.
32 & 33 Probably meant Longshoreman as occupation.
37 Last name hard to read; appears to be Pehlein
40 First name hard to read; occupation column has ditto, however, she's an infant.
49 Last name hard to read; Missouri was spelled incorrectly.
50-56 Missouri was spelled incorrectly.
79-81 Steerage passengers, all listed as widdows - they were probably
the children of steerage passenger 78.
85 & 93-96 Has u umlaut in second position of country they came from; they
were from Bohemia.
91 Has u umlaut in second letter of last name.
113 Has an a umlaut in second letter of last name. Occupation is unknown/not clear.
123 Second letter a in last name is a umlaut. Occupation is probably cook.
124 Second letter last name is o umlaut.
125 Occupation appears to be Schumacher.
126 Occupation is probably cook.
128 Last name has u umlaut second letter.
144 Last name has an a umlaut at third letter.
148 Last name has an o umlaut at second letter.
152 Last name has an u umlaut at second letter.
153 Last name has an a umlaut at second letter.

186-191 Has u umlaut in second position of country they came from; they
were from Bohemia.

V.H., or Victor Hermann, Kluge
According to a New York Times article from July 1, 1861 the Bark Dorette sailed from
Bremen on May 20, 1861 and arrived in New York harbor on Sunday June 30, 1861. She
offloaded her passengers on Monday July first.
My great grandfather V. H. Kluge was born in Breitenbach, today called Grossbreitenbach,
in the current German State of Thueringen, (pronounced Touring). In 1861, Breitenbach
was located in a Saxon principality called Schwarzburg-Sondershausen.
In America he was known as Hermann Kluge. He was born on January 2nd 1842. His father
Jacob, his Kluge grandfather and an Uncle, Johann Georg Nicolaus Kluge, were all
Schumachermeisters, or Master Shoemakers. Besides his birth record I recently acquired
a German newspaper announcement from February 21, 1861 concerning his voluntary
departure from his hometown of Breitenbach. The announcement is at the link Der Deutsche
Sonderhauser Zeitung (the name of the newspaper). Click on Zeitung. It mentions that
the Shoemaker journeyman, Victor Beatus Hermann Kluge from Breitenbach, was going to
depart to America soon.
He was my Mother's paternal grandfather. Prior to his marriage to Clara Meinigmann in
Brooklyn, New York in August 1874 Hermann Kluge was living on 21st Street in Brooklyn.
By June 1875 he moved to the town of New Utrecht, King's County New York with wife Clara
and three step children from her first marriage. It later became part of Brooklyn, N.Y.
in 1894. Hermann Kluge's shoemaker shop was attached to his house at 8710 Fifth Ave.
now in the Bay Ridge area, near Ft. Hamilton, of Brooklyn. In the early 1900's his house
was the first in the area to have electricity installed.
My grandfather Harry Kluge and his sister Elisabeth were her only children out of nine
that survived the longest. Three other children by her first husband Frantz or Frank
Kloppenborg died in their twenties in the 1890's. Her first husband died in March 1874.
My great grandmother Clara Meinigmann Kluge emigrated from Germany around 1866. She was
born in Schoeppingen, Westphalia in December 1840. I do not know what ship she traveled
to the U.S. on.
My great grandfather Hermann Kluge died on August 13th 1901 in Brooklyn at the age of 59.
My great grandmother Clara passed away on December 29th 1914 at the age of 74. They are
both buried with her first three children in Holy Cross Cemetery, Brooklyn, New York.
Their names were Ann, Josephine and William.
The photo with the picture of only a woman was my great grandmother Clara Meinigmann Kluge.
I estimate that this photo was taken in the years 1860-1865. Click here for photo of Clara.
The photo of the woman with the young children is the daughter of Clara and Hermann Kluge,
who is Elisabeth Kluge Davren. The two children are two sons from her first marriage,
Ellsworth and Harold Springer. Her first husband Harry Springer died in March 1911 and she
remarried Michael Davren. Click here for photo of Elisabeth and two children.
In the last photo my grandfather Harry Kluge is standing with son-in-law George Fischer
and the rest of the Kluge family on vacation in Equinunk, PA. September 1938. Missing
from the photo is his oldest daughter Anna Clara Kluge Fischer. She must have been taking
the picture. Positioned in the photo from left to right George Fischer far left; daughter
Marie Kluge; my grandfather Harry Kluge; daughter Elizabeth Kluge; Elizabeth has her arms
around my mother Harriet Kluge, youngest daughter of the Kluge's in the foreground; my
grandmother Mary Mulholland Kluge; daughter Katharine Kluge on the far right. In this
photo my mother Harriet was almost nine years old. Click here for photo of Family.
My grandfather moved his family from Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1924 to suburban Westfield, N.J.
My mother Harriet Kluge was born in the family home in Westfield in October 1928. I'm
researching the Kluge, Kloppenborg, Meinigmann, Springer, Davren, and Smith ancestors
and descendants of mine. For any feedback please EMAIL Jack Smith.
