I. H. Baetjer, Master of the Brem ship D H Watjen do solemnly, sincerely
and truly swear that the following LIst of Manifest, subscribed by me,
and now delivered by me to the Collector of Customs of the Collection
District of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers
taken on board of the said ship D H Watjen at Bremen from which port
said vessel has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated
the age, the sex, and the occupation of each said passengers, the part
of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which
each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to
become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth
the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the
names and ages of those who died.

I am related to passengers numbered 345-348. The correct spelling should be
Schwanke. The Schwankes settled in the Newton WI area and the spelling as
Schwanke (sometimes Swanke) is how the name appears there.

Correspondence added November 27, 2006, Passengers 122-127 Viehauser, Renner & Schwinghammer
My ancestors arrived June 26, 1855 on the DH Watjen. Updated information,
on their settlement:
Passengers 122-127: Viehausen was actually Viehauser
First known settlement: Watertown, Wisconsin 1855?
Stephen (122) died there in 1858 (buried St. Henry's)
Passengers Magdalena (123), Johann (124), Marie (125) and Anna Marie Renner
(127) eventually settled in Albany, Minnesota. Unsure of final whereabouts
of Anna Viehausen(126).
Magdalena (123), 1800-187?, lived with the Schwinghammer family for some
time after Stephan's death, near Appleton, WI. She homesteaded land in 1870
near Albany MN.
Johann(124) married Anna Marie Renner (127), lived in Illinois for a time,
serving in the Civil War from 1862-1865; to Albany MN sometime shortly
thereafter. Johann (1823-1883) & Anna Marie (1827-1899) had four children:
Maria (1855-1859 - buried in Watertown WI), John, 1857-1939 (spouse:Anna
Solinger), Theresia, 1859 - 1944?, (spouse: George Solinger), Anna, 1869 -
193?,(spouse: Peter Ruegemer, Jr.). Anna Maria's second spouse, after
Johann Viehauser's death, was Peter Ruegemer, Sr.
Marie (125) married widower John Platz in WI. and was one of the 3 founding
families of Albany MN, in 1863, along with the John Schwinghammer family
(also on this ship) and the Obermillers. Mary (Marie) & John Platz had two
children (John had six with first wife); Elizabeth (1860) Silbernick & John,
Jr. 1865.
I believe Anna (126) was a housekeeper in Appleton at the time of the 1860
census; no further information is known about her.
As noted above, The Schwinghammer family (passengers 112 - 120) followed a
similar path of migration. Whether the two families knew each other before
sailing is unknown, but the families had overlapping ties after that, living
in the same areas, and eventually settling together as the founders of
Albany, Minnesota.
Thank you for your work in transcribing. Because of your work, I was
finally able to pinpoint the arrival of my ancestors, and, added many more
connections to our family history that were previously unknown.

Correspondence added November 26, 2007 - Solchenberger
I am one of the great great grandsons of George and Theresse Solchenberger,
passengers 167 and 168. They immigrated to Woniwok, Wisconsin, where the
family had a dispute over the family church and religion. The family members
on George's side changed their name to Salchenberger.
My grandfather, Bill Salchenberger (George's son) immigrated to Bassano, Alberta, Canada
and then to Olds, Alberta, where he now rests.
I hope this is of some interest to other family members.
