Transcriber's Notes: ? A question mark indicates material which is indecipherable. * An asterisk indicates further information in the passenger notes. ^ A caret indicates that the following letters were written in superscript. * Ages were listed by the original transcriber as 26/4, 41/4, etc. These have been changed to 26y4m, 41y4m, etc. to comply with guild guidelines. * The writer of this list used ditto marks in the occupation column. I don't think that children (or females) have those occupations--it looks like the ditto marks are an indication that there is no entry for the column because where the writer does indicate a repeat of an entry he uses "do" an abbreviation for ditto. * The term "Indeterm." is used in the destination column apparently indicating there was no determined destination for that passenger. * Spellings are reproduced as found in the original, i.e. North Carlina (North Carolina), seckond, etc. English versions of some of the European terms: Baiern = Bavaria Danemark = Denmark Frankreich = France Hessen = Hessia Meklenburg = Mecklenburg Preussen, Preuss = Prussia, Prussian Sachsen = Saxony Ungarn = Hungary 3 Danemark has an umlauted "a." 27-28 Surname has an umlauted "a" so may be Schaefer. 35 List number is actually 35a and then the name August Saamenfeld is inserted. See also Passenger 230. 39 Occupation: baker. 42 Occupation: baker. 43-44 Country of origin looks like Peuss, Reuss, or Beuss. I believe it should be Preuss, i.e., an abbreviation for Preussen. 55 Surname has an umlauted "u" so may be Fuerstenheim, and Cothen has an umlauted "o." 86-87 Surname has an umlauted "o" so may be Boehm. 125 Surname has an umlauted "a" so may be Kaempf--which is how it is written for the two preceding entries, presumably the parents of this child. 149-151 Surname has an umlauted "u" so may be Lueders. 169 Surname ahs an umlauted "o" so may be Schloesser. 215 Surname may be Flath. 229 Only the surname is listed and then the note in the age column: some days and further note beginning in the occupation column: born on board the 26th of August. 230 Note says see 35b, where the name August Saamenfeld is inserted as a passenger in the second cabin class. Correspondence added 11-02-2006, Passengers 73 & 74, EGGERT Dear Sirs! I am sure I found my great-great-grandmother together with her husband on the list of passengers on bark Copernicus from Hamburg to New York on 6th of September 1851. Her maiden name was Tonagel, in the list their names are: Johann Eggert and Elise Eggert. Elise had three children, two with another man, the third, a girl, together with Johann Eggert. The first child, a boy, was my great-grandfather. That time Elise lived in Schwerin, Mecklenburg.Later my great-grandfather lived and worked in Schwerin. Some years he was responsable for the gardens of Schwerin castle. At least the third child, the girl, Elise could have taken with her on the long travel to New York, but I couldn‘t find any children going with them. Very interesting would be for me, to find out, when they arrived and where Elise and Johann Eggert stayed after the arrivel at New York. Do you have any idea how to find out? Your database was a great help for me. Thank you very much! Yours sincerely, Gudrun v. Einem
