Transcriber's Notes:

* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder not the transcriber,
or is used to call attention to additional information in the transcriber notes.

Question marks replace illegible information or letters.

The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there is a system of numbering the manifests that is a part of the National
Archives file system on Chinese persons. These numbers are included in the identification
of the film and reel numbers below.

The difference between the total number of passengers in the Recapitulation and the
transcribed list is probably the passenger listed as short shipped.

For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1895 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case O'Leary).

Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Landing Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were
probably allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives
should have a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Landing Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).

For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)

The following columns had no entries and are not included in the table:
 Height
 Complexion
 Color of Eyes
Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification

No of Certificate is crossed out replaced by No of Ticket.

Occupation is Grocer for all passengers except as noted below.

Last Place of Residence is not completed for passengers not bound for San Francisco.

Demerara is in Guyana. Acajutla is in El Salvador.

According to the National Archives branch in San Bruno, California it is possible that they have
some information on any Chinese passenger who arrived in San Francisco after 1886.

It is very difficult to distinguish capital S and capital L on this list. There are multiple
examples in the words San Francisco, San Diego and Los Angeles, but the S and L are exactly the same
in some of these examples. Not all names are indecipherable. The following passengers have
that difficult letter, replaced by ?, sometimes in more than one name:
 7,10,13-16,25,31,34,56,58,65-67,90,104,124

20 Last Residence has El P crossed out and Alameda written in later by someone else.
26 First and second name begin with the same letter, Y or G.
36 Third name is Dock or Duck.
44 After Woodland is a word that could be Idaho.
47-53 Occupation is "married woman."
70 Departed per steamer City of Sydney, Panama, Nov 13, 1895
72-73 Second name is Fie or Fu.
73-79 First name is Ow or On.
84-117 Departed per SPRR Nov 5, 1895
85 First name is Mak or Man.
91 Second name begins with a tall letter. It could be S, L or J.
97 Second name is Yum or Yuw.
119,122 Departed per steamer City of Sydney, Panama, Nov 13, 1895
121-122 Second names begin with the same letter. It could be S, L or J.
