Transcriber's Notes
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder not the transcriber,
or is used to call attention to additional information in the transcriber notes.
Question marks replace illegible information or letters.
The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there is a system of numbering the manifests that is a part of the National
Archives file system on Chinese persons. These numbers are included in the identification
of the film and reel numbers below.
For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1892 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case Grant).
Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Landing Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were
probably allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives
should have a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Landing Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).
For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)
The No of Ticket column was added by the original completer.
Occupation is grocer for all passengers except as noted below.
The following columns had no entries and are not included in the table:
Height
Complexion
Color of Eyes
Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification
There is a La Libertad on the coasts of Ecuador and El Salvador and in the interior of
Nicaragua. Since the City of New York sailed between Panama and San Francisco and ports
are the usual destination it is likely that this destination is in El Salvador.
According to the National Archives branch in San Bruno, California it is possible that
they have some information on any Chinese passenger who arrived in San Francisco after
1886.
27 Occupation is Boy. He is "with his ? (probably cousin) No.43. Chun Pung Sun Sing
Kee Jackson St."
31 Second name is Fang or Sang.
33 Second name is probably Ma, but there appears to be a tail on the second letter that
makes it look like Mg.
49 Occupation is Woman. She is "with her husband No. 73. Hoo Noey Moy On Wo. Wash. St."
50 Occupation is Boy. He is "with his mother No. 74 Lum Won Ho on Wo. Wash. St."
63 Occupation is Woman. She is "to join her husband Chun Hang Hing Chong on Wo. Wash. St."
64 Occupation is Woman. She is "to join her husband Wong Yow Sun Sing Dupont St."
65 Occupation is Woman. She is "to join her husband Ho Chock Yuen Chong Wash. St."
