* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder not the transcriber,
or is used to call attention to additional information in the transcriber notes.
Question marks replace illegible information or letters.
The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there is a system of numbering the manifests that is a part of the National
Archives file system on Chinese persons. These numbers are included in the identification
of the film and reel numbers below.
For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1892 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case Grant).
Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Landing Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were
probably allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives
should have a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Landing Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).
For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed Transit Cert No. followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)
The following columns had no entries and are not included in the table:
Height
Complexion
Color of Eyes
Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification
There are two columns of figures under the No. of Certificate heading. The first
is probably No. of Ticket.
There is an extra column on the right side of the page, Chinese Consular Certificates dated.
Apparently some passengers had numbers on their certificates and others had dates. Some
of these dates have an added notation "S Cert." See individual passenger notes.
Occupation is Grocer for all passengers. Last Residence is China for all passengers
except as noted below.
The total number of passengers in the recapitulation probably does not count the two
in the transcription who are described as "Not on Board."
According to the National Archives branch in San Bruno, California it is possible that
they have some information on any Chinese passenger who arrived in San Francisco after 1886.
4,5,22,46-47,49,51,61 all have the notation S. Cert. before the certificate date in
the added column. See above.
15 There is an entry of 27th July 1891 in the Chinese Consular Certificates dated column.
33 "Escaped through the crowd of outward bound passengers Oct 25, 1892."
52 "To join her husband Chun Tack Tai Chong Jackson St. Female."
67-68 are described as "with her father No 6 Ng Ming Yip Luen Chong Sacramento St."
71 Occupation is Cook.
83-90 There is a bracket joining these passengers, probably to name the vessel and
departure date of sailing, but it is too light to read.
90 with her husband #74 Chung Wan Ping
