Transcriber's Notes:

* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder not the transcriber,
or is used to call attention to additional information in the transcriber notes.

Question marks replace illegible information or letters.

The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there is a system of numbering the manifests that is a part of the National
Archives file system on Chinese persons. These numbers are included in the identification
of the film and reel numbers below.

For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1896 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case O'Leary with exceptions noted below).

Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Landing Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were
probably allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives
should have a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Landing Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).

For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)

The following columns had no entries and are not included in the table:
 Height
 Complexion
 Color of Eyes
Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification

The No of Certificate column has been divided into two, labeled Ticket and Cert.
Perhaps the dates entered are the dates of the Certificates.

Occupation is Grocer for all passengers except as noted below.

The Last Residence column has some Chinese words entered for passengers not bound
for San Francisco. It seems likely that these are villages. Some of these entries
are written with two words above the line followed by two more on the line. These
are transcribed as written. Passengers with nothing in this column have ditto marks
signifying the same as the entry above them, but it is difficult to decipher because
these marks seem to occur also where there is an entry. There are also more ditto
marks than there are lines of passenger names. It is not customary for ISTG to
transcribe ditto marks, usually replacing them with the information they signify.
In this instance the ditto marks are used because it is not clear what information
they signify. Perhaps they mean that each passenger has four words. For those passengers
with two words written the ditto marks signify the two words written above the line at
the top of the column so that each passenger has these two words as well as the two
that are dittoed or written on his line.
The first of these words to appear looks like Seng Chuen. However, on the next page the
words are Seong Wai. There is a line through the Seng on the first page that could obscure
an o making this word also Seong.

According to the National Archives branch in San Bruno, California it is possible that they have
some information on any Chinese passenger who arrived in San Francisco after 1886.

10 Occupation is Boy.
11 Occupation is Woman. She was landed by Inspector Meredith.
16 Occupation is Missionary.
17-19 Occupation is Woman. In the column where passengers above have a date written there
is an illegible word written for passenger 17 with ditto marks for the other two.
       This could be Depart.
18-19 were landed by Inspector Meredith.
20-21 There is an illegible word in the last column that begins Mecre?
20 Occupation is Diplomatic Service.
21 Occupation is Servant.
22-45 Departed per SPRR March 28, 1896
60 First name could be Sat.
64 Occupation is Boy.
73-78,80 Departed per SPRR March 28, 1896.
