Transcriber's Notes:

* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder not the transcriber,
or is used to call attention to additional information in the transcriber notes.

Question marks replace illegible information or letters.

The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there is a system of numbering the manifests that is a part of the National
Archives file system on Chinese persons. These numbers are included in the identification
of the film and reel numbers below.

For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1892 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case Grant).

Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Landing Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were
probably allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives
should have a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Landing Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).

For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)

The following columns had no entries and are not included in the table:
 Height
 Complexion
 Color of Eyes

The first group of passengers has two columns of numbers in the No. of Certificate
column. This probably represents the ticket number and certificate number. The remaining
passengers have only one number, probably ticket number, and it is impossible to read
 many of them.

Occupation is Merchant for San Francisco and Panama passengers and Grocer for Havana
 passengers except as noted below.

Last Place of Residence is recorded in the same space as the various stamps and is
difficult to read as a consequence. Those passengers with a blank for this information
could be the same as the place listed immediately above; this might have been recorded as
ditto marks that were obscured by the stamp.

Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification is completed for only a few
passengers. This information is recorded below in individual notes.

According to the National Archives branch in San Bruno, California it is possible that they have
some information on any Chinese passenger who arrived in San Francisco after 1886.

1 Small scar above left ear.
2 Small scar on left eyebrow ??? neck.
3 Scar on left side of face, mole back of neck.
4 Small mole on right of chin & on left side of face.
5 Small mole front of neck, small mole front of left ear.
6 Small scar on left cor of mouth & hair mole on left of chin.
7 Pock marked face and scar on right eyebrow.
8 Small mole below left eye, & small mole below right eye.
9 Scar on end of right eyebrow & small mole on right of face.
10 Mole on forehead & scar between eyebrows.
11 Small scar above left eyebrow & scar above right ear.
12 Lightly pockmarked.
13 Scar on left ear, and scar on the end of eyebrow.
14 Small scar above left ear, scar back of neck.
15 Scar above each ear & back of neck.
16 Scar right of forehead, scar on the head, branded.
17 Small scar above on left eyebrow.
20 Large pit mark left side of mouth.
46-48 Fem is written beside these names.
58-60 There is no comment about how these passengers proceeded from San Francisco.
Often those passengers who didn't have I.T. certificates went to Havana by steamer.
64 Occupation is "with his brother #20." The numbers are nearly all illegible but
often the referred to relative is directly above. In this case the second passenger
on this part of the list seems to have number 20 and has the same name, Mar, listed
first, probably the surname. These are the only passengers named Mar on the this
     part of the list.
