Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder not the transcriber,
or is used to call attention to additional information in the transcriber notes.
Question marks replace illegible information or letters.
The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there is a system of numbering the manifests that is a part of the National
Archives file system on Chinese persons. These numbers are included in the identification
of the film and reel numbers below.
For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1896 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case Picard with exceptions noted below).
Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Landing Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were
probably allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives
should have a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Landing Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).
For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)
The following columns had no entries and are not included in the table:
Height
Complexion
Color of Eyes
The No of Ticket column was added by the original completer.
Occupation is Merchant for all passengers except as noted below.
Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification was completed only for
the first 12 passengers.
Last Residence has been obscured by the Landed stamp for San Francisco passengers.
It is transcribed where it was possible to interpret. Where the space is blank, there
appears to be nothing entered. Last Residence is China for passengers bound elsewhere.
The Physical Marks column was completed for only the first twelve passengers on the list.
Acajutla is in El Salvador.
According to the National Archives branch in San Bruno, California it is possible that they have
some information on any Chinese passenger who arrived in San Francisco after 1886.
8 Courtland is identified as "Cal."
13 Landed by Insp. Grant.
24-25 Fem is written beside the Ticket No for passenger 24. There is a faint mark beside
the Ticket No. for passenger 25 that could also be Fem.
31-32 Landed by Insp. Grant.
35 There are ditto marks under the Habeas Corpus USDC Case stamp of the passenger
above this one. However, it is not at all clear they represent that this
passenger was also held. It would be unusual thaqt the stamp would be too light
to appear on the microfilm and also unusual to use ditto marks instead of the stamp.
37 Occupation is Cook.
39 Occupation is woman.
40-41,46 Landed by Insp. Grant.
40-44 Are listed as "F."
47 Last name could be Tat or Fat, although the letter is different from other Ts or Fs.
52,56-57 Occupation is Boy.
64-65 Third name is An or On.
