Liverpool, England, and Queensland, Ireland, to Boston, Mass.
4 May 1885
I, Alex McKay , Master of the S.S. "Catalonia" do solemnly, sincerely, and truly declare that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of Boston is a full and perfect List of all passengers taken on board the said vessel at Liverpool and Queenstown from which port the said vessel has now arrived; and that on the said list are truly designated the age, sex, and calling of each of the said passengers, the location of the compartment or space occupied by each during the passage, the country of the nativity of each, and also the destination or location intended by each; and that the said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of the said passengers who have died on the said voyage, and the dates and causes of death, and the names and ages of those who died; also of the pieces of baggage of each; also a true statement, so far as it can be ascertained, with reference to the intention of each alien passenger as to a protracted sojurn in this country. So help me God.

Transcriber's Notes:
The use of an * indicates an omission or error made by the original recorder.
The use of a ? indicates a word or letters that could not be read, due to quality
of the original document.
The recorder, while generally having good penmanship, had the habit of writing
certain small letters all the same: u, n, m, e, and i were nearly identical.
Names like Winnie or Jennie were a series of small pointed strokes.
The recorder had another idiosyncracy. Wherever Katherine appears on this list,
he used the custom form of abbreviation of the period. He wrote Kat, then a
small e with a horizontal stroke over it, suggesting that it is the final letter
and that the others were left out. The recorder, however, wrote out completely all
entries for the name Catherine wherever they occurred.
311 A faint i dot could read Uthiss. The first s loop seems to be filled with ink.
316 Surname appears to be Lun or Lim, with an undotted i.
317 A followed by 5 points. Maybe Anne. Recorder writes j and g very much alike.
A faint dot above suggests Bjertin.
335 The third letter has two points and looks like the letter after the n rather
the first of two n's it suggests at first glance.
381-382 Ha followed by five points. The last could be an e. 382 is a ditto.
390 Joh followed by a floating a with a dash under it, suggesting an abbreviation
for Johanna.
391 Augt followed by another floating a with a dash under it. It may represent an
abbreviation for a Swedish given name unknown to this transcriber. It might also
be Augusta.
393 Between the J and the final y there are 5 points. Maybe Jenny. There is a dot
not quite over the first point which may be a blemish on the film.
395 There are six points between the a's and two more after the second a. This seems
to be the most likely spelling.
444-449 These six passengers are relatives of this transcriber. My grandmother and
her sister arrived two years earlier on this same ship.
456 Another Katherine abbreviation as discussed in the transcriber's notes.
530 It appears to be either Hych or Hyeh.
553 Der followed by 5 points. Maybe Derum, or Derenn.
598 The first 5 or 6 letters seem to be Cowhi or Corrhi followed by a faint final
letter which may be an l. Cahill comes to mind as a name, but it is more an o
than an a for the second letter.
