SS Catalonia

I, Alex McKay , Master of the S.S. "Catalonia" do solemnly, sincerely, and truly declare that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of Boston is a full and perfect List of all passengers taken on board the said vessel at Liverpool and Queenstown from which port the said vessel has now arrived; and that on the said list are truly designated the age, sex, and calling of each of the said passengers, the location of the compartment or space occupied by each during the passage, the country of the nativity of each, and also the destination or location intended by each; and that the said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of the said passengers who have died on the said voyage, and the dates and causes of death, and the names and ages of those who died; also of the pieces of baggage of each; also a true statement, so far as it can be ascertained, with reference to the intention of each alien passenger as to a protracted sojurn in this country. So help me God.

The use of an * indicates an omission or error made by the original recorder.
 
The use of a ? indicates a word or letters that could not be read, due to quality
 of the original document.
 
The recorder, while generally having good penmanship, had the habit of writing
 certain small letters all the same: u, n, m, e, and i were nearly identical.
 Names like Winnie or Jennie were a series of small pointed strokes.
 
The recorder had another idiosyncracy. Wherever Katherine appears on this list,
 he used the custom form of abbreviation of the period.  He wrote Kat, then a
 small e with a horizontal stroke over it, suggesting that it is the final letter
 and that the others were left out. The recorder, however, wrote out completely all
 entries for the name Catherine wherever they occurred.
 

30-38 These lines are missing on the original document.
  47  Probably Wisworth.  The W is unbalanced, resembling Uu and the I is undotted.
  52  Possibly Shornton or Showton.
  59  Possibly Oldum.
  81  Possible Rastleigh with an uncrossed t.
 102  As cited above, seven pointed strokes could read Jennie.
 120  First glance suggests an unusual spelling for Hurley, but the odd stroke starting
      the y suggests a crossed t for Herrty. After the first name came dittos.
 139-140 May be Deignan.  The i is undotted in David as well.
 147  May be Ruam, also.
 164  Can't make first letter. Second is an r followed by 5 points and ending with a y.
      Like maybe -remey.
 177  Most likely Coggerin, the two figure 8 letters below the line look like those
      used in the more familiar name Higgins. 
 227  Unusual spelling for this surname, but it clearly has only six letters. Kate
      as noted above.
 260-261  Gr followed by 4 points and no i dot above them. May be Grim with a single m.
 267  Letter after the a could be either u or n.
 283  Marin or Marne.
