Transcriber's Notes:
A question mark (?) indicates a letter or a number that can not be transcribed
definitely.
An asterisk (*) indicates either difficulty in deciphering the handwriting of the
manifest or something in the Transcriber's Notes to which the reader should refer.
A caret (^) indicates that the following letter in a word or name is superscripted.
The transcriber numbers the passengers consecutively, even though they are not
numbered in the original manifest.
The recorder did not use ditto marks to indicate "same as above". Many sex
and occupation entries are left blank and the reader is confronted with the problem of
interpreting the recorder's intended meaning. The transcriber uses the sex last
entered for a passenger above, and correlates this interpretation with whether the
passenger has a masculine or feminine given name. Occupations are only given in the
transcription if the recorder entered them. Since it was common for recorders not to
make an entry in the occupation column for female passengers or for children, a possible
though not a certain interpretation of the intended occupation where left blank is that
of the occupation of the last adult male entered above.
The recorder of the manifest often abbreviates a passenger's Occupation, such as
"Merch" or "Mercht" for Merchant, "Mech" for Mechanic and "Labr" for Laborer.
306 Surname appears to be either "Waerner" or "Wuerner".
310 Surname appears to be either "Bauerle" or "Bawrle".
322 A note associated with this passenger states that she died on the voyage.
The date, time or cause of death is not recorded on the manifest.
325-327 Surname is either "Kruger" or "Kreuger".
363 There is damage to the manifest in the area of the passenger's surname
rendering the middle letters of the name unreadable. A guess is that the
surname is Danielefsky or some similar name.
374 Surname is either "Rader" or "Roder".
382 Surname is either "Schwar" or "Schweer".
407 Surname is either "Pfisterer" or "Pfistener".
409 Surname is either "Fruck" or "Frack".
411 Surname is possibly "Heiss", "Hiss" or "Haiss".
419 Surname is either "Nathdurft" or "Vathdurft".
428-430 It is not clear from the way these passengers' names are recorded
whether their surname is "Caroll" or perhaps "Steinhoff".
441 Surname is possibly "Bycgeck" or "Bycjeck".
452 Surname is either "Schuf" or "Schief".
462 Surname appears to be either "Weckbach" or "Weikbach".
463 Surname is possibly "Scheimer", "Scheiwer", "Schumer" or "Schuwer".
472 Surname is either "Nagengart" or "Nagengast".
475-476 Surname is either "Kofbauer" or "Kopbauer".
478 Surname is either "Austadt" or "Anstadt".
481 Given name appears to be written as "Gabv.", but might possibly be "Gabr."
for Gabriel.
495-496 Surname appears to be either "Clams" or "Clanis".
502 Surname is Stratmann" or "Strotmann".
503 Surname appears to be either "Maryer" or "Marxer".
513-514 Surname is either "Kos" or "Kas".
521-526 Surname is possibly "Matejeck", "Matycek" or "Matejcek".
529 Surname is either "Hauschka" or "Hanschka".
535 There is damage to the manifest in the area of this passenger's surname
rendering only the first two letters readable.
565 Surname is either "Lilb" or "Lulb".
568 Surname is possibly "Rotger", "Rotzer" or "Rotser".
584 Passenger's Age appears to be 20, 30 or 50.
Correspondence September 14, 2007 Passengers 332-340 Burow
Re: S.S. Bremen, arrived New York April 14, 1868
Please note the date of arrival is April 14, 1868, not 15, as on your site.
Re: Passengers # 332 - 340:
The correct spelling of surname is: Burow.
(These are my direct ancestors, and I have copies of the passenger list from microfilm.)
I also have receipts as train tickets dated April 14, 1868.
It might be helpful for others to correct the errors.
Thanks,
BH
