Transcriber's Notes:

This list comes from a publication (Friesisches Jahrbuch, 1958) which I
found in the Schuster Book Store (Antiquarität) after being made aware of the
publication by genealogical researcher Hilda Bruns of Campen (Ostfriesland),
Germany.
I believe the names of the women are their maiden names because the
male/head of the household is usually listed first and then a female name
and then the children with surnames the same as the father's.

1 Place of origin is listed as Freeport (Illinois). He must have
emigrated earlier and returned to Ostfriesland as a U.S. citizen.
4 Given name has an umlauted "u".
45 Given name has an umlauted "o".
22-23 Surname has an umlauted "o" thus Ropke or Roepke.
49-50 Surname is most probably von der Heyden.
67 Second given name has two umlauted "u"s.

Passenger #28 Antje Hinr. Busker was the wife of JO Akkerman.

I have always been curious as to why the women's maiden names appear to have been used on this ship's passenger list. It is the first one I have seen where the wives are listed with maiden names. They were also my first ancestors to come across the Atlantic, however they arrived at South Carolina, in July or August 1857 on the Schooner Johannes.
I also have another spelling for her surname. Per the civil and church records of Veenhusen, Germany her surname was spelled Busscher. Per her gravestone it was also spelled Busscher. And the German pronunciation was probably Busker.
From the Veenhusen church records we know that JO and Antje Akkerman lost a 3 year old son, Hinderich Jansen Akkerman, on 14 April 1857 and his burial was 15 April 1857. It is assumed that the death is the reason they did not board. But perhaps the cause of death is also pertinent here. It is listed as "Scharlachfieber". [Scarlet Fever]

Were there any quarantine laws (or even common sense) in that time era which would give us a time frame of when they could have first left from the Emden port? [Any passenger with an obvious illness may not have been allowed to board.]
Also I find it curious that they became ill on their journey when their son had also died from disease a few months earlier. What would be the incubation period of "Scharlachfieber"? [The incubation period of Scarlet Fever is 3-5 days.]
An article from a 1916 "Ostfriesische Nachrichten" states that their trip was a very burdensom journey of ten weeks and two days. My mother wrote that they disembarked in Norfolk VA and had come down with yellow fever in South Carolina. [According to the passenger manifest, this family disembarked at South Carolina. Yellow Fever, which has different symptoms than those associated with Scarlet Fever, may have been contracted once they were in South Carolina. It's a viral infection with an incubation period of 3-6 days.]

Thanks for your support on my genealogy quest. Jean Sietsema

Correspondence added August 14, 2008 - Passengers 21-24 Akkermann/Busker

Please replace the correspondence date Dec 13, 2007 with the following which has been sent to me by the people mentioned with their e-mail addresses:
It has been concluded that Passengers 27-30, Jan O. Akkermann, his wife, Antje Buscher (not Busker) and their children, Oltmann and Etje did not board the Antje Brons, since just four days prior to sailing, on 14 April 1857, their son Hinderich Jansen Akkermann, age about 2 ½, died of scarlet fever. He was buried the next day on 15 April 1857. Since the incubation period of scarlet fever is 3-5 days, it can be safely assumed that this is the reason they were not allowed to board, as there were a number of children on this voyage.
Contributors to this conclusion were Jean Sietsema, great-granddaughter of Oltmann and Harlan D Oelmann, great-grandson of Jan O. Akkermann.
