Ship Andrew Foster
I, Jabez Howes, Jr., do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest of Passengers, subscribed with my name, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs for the District of New York, contains, to the best of my knowledge and belief, a just and true account of all the Passengers received on board the Ship Andrew Foster whereof I am Master, from Liverpool, England.
So help me God
(signed) Jabez Howes, Jr.
Sworn to this January 15th 1851
Before me (signed) H. Calhoun, D.C.
List or Manifest of all the Passengers taken on board the Ship Andrew Foster whereof Jabez Howes, Jr., is master, from Liverpool, burthen twelve hundred tons.
Columns represent: Name, age (yrs & mos), sex, occupation, the country to which they severally belong, the country in which they intend to inhabit and died on the voyage. The died on the voyage column was also used to list pieces of luggage and physical infirmities of certain passengers. As all passengers intended to become inhabitants of the U.S., that column was eliminated.

529* Michael McManus 30 male a stowaway
Handwritten notes, probably by Captain: 508 over one year old
19 infants
527 total
Transcriber's Notes:
The use of an * indicates an omission, error or explanation of
notations made by the original recorder.
The use of a ? indicates a word or letters that could not be read, due to the
quality of original document.
The use of an ^ indicates the latter part of the name was superscribed.
*Following Mr James Bell, the first passenger listed, all remaining passengers
were numbered (1-527) and listed as 2nd Cabin & Steerage. The stowaway listed
at the end was not numbered either. However for purposes here, Mr Bell is listed
as passenger #1 and the others follow in order.
*Sometimes pieces of luggage were grouped together either for a family or a group
of people probably traveling together. These numbers are listed with the last
name in the family or group but encompass the entire family or group.
*In several instances there was a star drawn and a comment as to the physical
condition of the passenger was written in the same column that listed the pieces
of luggage. These comments have been put in parentheses by the transcriber.
*A running number of the pieces of luggage was written at the bottom of each
page of the manifest and then totalled at the end. Those numbers are listed in
parentheses to the right of the name of last person for that page.
*Sometimes the ship's transcriber wrote Inft for infant and no age in months,
and sometimes he wrote Inft and the age in months. In the latter case this
was changed by this transcriber to 0y6m to comply with ISTG formatting guidelines.
* The passenger count found at the end of the manifest did not include the first
passenger listed (Mr. James Bell), nor did it include the stowaway. It did,
however, include the four passengers who died on the voyages.
292-296 Four pieces of luggage were linked to this group of 1 woman and 3 men.
317-319 Two pieces of luggage were linked to this group of 3 men.
325-327 Two pieces of luggage were linked to this group of 2 men and 1 woman.
340-343 Four pieces of luggage were linked to this group of 2 men and 2 women.
344-345 Two pieces of luggage were linked to this group of 2 women.
348 Child died on the 6th of Dec. This was probably the year 1850.
363 Occupation transcribed as written on manifest.
372-373 Two pieces of luggage were linked to this group of 1 boy and 1 woman.
382 It looks as if there is a line drawn through the occupation, probably
because there are no other occupations listed for the women.
403 After the notation stating "one eye gone" there is a small drawing
of a circle with the right eye missing and the left eye, nose and mouth
in place.
422 Although this ship is listed as arriving in January of 1851, the death
year for this passenger is definitely written as 1849. However, it is
the belief of this transcriber that the year is 1850.
427 The death year for this passenger is definitely written as 1849, but this
transcriber believes it to be 1850.
438 The first letter in question is like no other on the manifest, it could
be anything. The second letter is either an n or a u.
440-443 Four pieces of luggage were linked to this group of 3 men and 1 woman.
474 Given name transcribed as written.
484 Surname transcribed as written.
490-492 Three pieces of luggage were linked to this group of 1 man, 1 woman and
1 child.
522 Although this female passenger is listed as a labourer, the transcriber
probably meant to write it for the man below.
