Transcriber's Notes:
An asterisk indicates further information in the Passenger Notes.
A question mark indicates indecipherable material.
A caret (^) indicates superscript.
Because of the writing style found in this list the "a" "o" and "u" are often
difficult to determine and the final letters of names often trail off into nothing.
Therefore, I have listed alternative name possibilities in the passenger notes or
augmented the name list with information from the monograph.
This list from the National Archives and Records Administration (Microfilm 237/1287)
has been compared to a list found in a monograph which can be found in the Ostfriesen
Genealogical Society of America library at Forest Lake MN. The monograph is titled
"From Bremen to America in 1850: Fourteen Rare Emigrant Ship Lists" by Clifford Neal
Smith, Monograph No. 22 in the German-American Genealogical Research Series
(ISSN 0094-7806), published by Westland Publications, McNeal, Arizona, 1987.
In the preface to the monograph, Mr. Smith states that the information comes
from an . . . obscure weekly newspaper from Rudolstadt, Thuringia (Germany)entitled
the "Allgemeine Auswanderungs-Zeitung," devoted to news about ship sailings ...
The newspaper can be found in the Beinecke Rare Book Collection of the Yale University Library.
Discrepancies between the NARA list and the monograph list are mentioned in the
Passenger Notes. I cannot explain why some names included in the monograph are not
on the NARA passenger list or why some on the NARA list are not on the monograph list.
I can only conjecture that people whose names appear on the German list may
have decided not to emigrate, and people whose names appear on the NARA ship list may
have been last minute passengers in Germany. Name spellings vary from one list to the
other--again, because it cannot be determined which list is most correct, I have
included all the variations to facilitate research.
The monograph states that the ship left Bremen on 20 September 1850 and operated
under the Oldenburg flag.
3 Monograph lists name as H. Bolt and says he is travelling with
A. Bolt and Rietmeyer.
5 Monograph lists name as W. Eichmann.
6 Monograph lists surname as Schlieper.
5-6 Travelling together.
8 Monograph lists surname as Kamlach.
9-10 Monograph lists surname as Rothermich.
11 Monograph lists surname as Kaering indicating that the "a" of
Karing is umlauted.
13 Monograph lists surname as F. M. Schmidt.
14 Monograph lists surname as W. Joellenbeck indicating that the "o"
is umlauted for Jollenbeck.
15 Very likely that the surname should have an umlauted "o" thus may
be Schroeder. Unusual to have an occupation listed for a female,
esp. one so young.
16 Monograph lists surname as Koppel and states that this is a family
of six travelling together.
22-23 Monograph lists surname as Foerg.
27 Monograph lists name as P. H. Brackensiek (or Brackenfiek) and
travelling as a family of six.
33 Monograph lists name as G. Jaeger.
36 Monograph lists name as A. Hartwig.
37 Monograph lists name as J. H. Bruening travelling as a family of
four.
46 Monograph lists name as Zinn.
47 Monograph lists name as C. Tebbe travelling as a family of four.
53-54 Surname (except for first letter) is obliterated by damage to the
original list. I believe these two entries are those listed in
the monograph under C. Beck; thus, Cath. Beck and Adam Beck.
55 Monograph lists name as Raabe and family of three.
56 Monograph lists name as A. A. Woltke travelling as a family of six.
62 Monograph lists name as H. Lueckmann.
64 Monograph lists name as J. Rudloff
68 Monograph lists name as H. Riepe, family of four.
72-74 Surname may be Hoen or Hohn (as listed in monograph).
75-76 Monograph lists names as J. F. Broehermann A. M. Broehermann.
79 Monograph lists name as Rhode, family of five.
85 Monograph lists name as G. M. Schultheis.
86 Monograph lists name as Rietmeyer; travelling with H. Bolt (Boldt).
88 Is this A. Stuenne from Biedenbach as listed in the monograph?
89 Monograph lists name as H. H. Struss.
91 Monograph lists name as F. Beu.
92 Name appears to be Arjens but monograph lists a C. G. Argus from
Greitz.
96-97 Surname may be Mahnken.
100 Monograph says he's travelling with J. Dittmar and J. Henkel (see #102).
102 Monograph lists name as J. Dittmar.
103 Surname may be Hamlan or the monograph lists name as Haemlein (Hamlein
with an umlauted "a").
105 Surname could be Neunhamm or Neunhamme.
108 Monograph lists her as a widow travelling as a family of six and with
W. Tewes. Note in far right margin: died on this passage.
116 Monograph lists name as H. Grothe.
117 Monograph says travelling with H. Henning & J. Grohne.
118 Monograph lists name as S. Rest
119 Monograph lists name as F. Nolte travelling as a family of three along
with F. Wilmar (see passenger #123)
123 Monograph lists name as Wilmar and only as travelling with the Noltes.
124 Monograph says travelling as a family of three.
127 Monograph lists name as F. Stueben (i.e. Stuben with an umlauted "u")
ans also says he is travelling with G. Klotz.
128 Possibly the C. Schwarbach of the monograph and from Achmer. Something
is incorrect here--a female smith?
130 Could this be the A. Rugbach from Goslar as listed in the monograph?
135 Monograph lists name as J. Boedeker (i.e. Bodeker with an umlauted "o").
136 Monograph says travelling as a family of three.
139 Monograph lists name as W. Tewes.
142 Monograph lists name as J. G. Buehler (i.e. Buhler with an umlauted "u").
144 Surname may be Streiver or is it the L. Straubing from Carlsruhe as
listed in the monograph.
145 Surname may be the Schuedrumpf (Schudrumpf) as listed in the monograph
(from Leimbach).
148 Acc. to monograph, travelling with B. Meybeck (#149) and O. F. Ueten (#151).
149 Monograph lists name as Meybeck.
150(151) Monograph lists name as Linzner from Fresco and travelling with C. Beck.
153 Monograph lists name as J. Eckardt from Leimbach and travelling with
J. G. & J. Schuedrumpf.
154 Monograph lists name as Schuedrumpf.
155 Monograph lists name as H. Hoppe.
156 Monograph lists name as A. Dierkes travelling with F. Dierkes, A.&
F. Dewenter & H. Hille.
159 Monograph lists name as H. Hille.
160 Monograph lists name as H. Klaas travelling as a family of six.
166 Monograph lists name as F. Dierkes travelling with A. Dierkes, A.&
F. Dewenter & H. Hille.
167 Monograph lists name as H. Schlueter.
168 Surname has an umlauted "u" so may be Guenther.
169 May be the J. Kuefner as listed in the monograph. From Neudorf).
170 Monograph lists name as J. Dossing.
The following names appear on the list in the monograph but do not appear on the NARA
microfilm list, thus may not have been on the ship or perhaps a page of the ship
manifest is missing:
171 M. Baumhoefer (Baumhofer) from Westbarkhausen
172 C. Bosse from Burgdorf
173 H. G. Clausen from Brake
174 C. Donau from Bremen
175 J. Forchtel from Aldorf
