Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk is used to call attention to additional information in the Notes on
Passenger Entries (see below).
? A question mark is used to indicate illegible letters or words.
No deaths or births during the voyage are recorded on this passenger list.
Names were transcribed as written insofar as possible, without regard to obvious
spelling errors; the following passenger notes include the transcriber's comments
about spelling.
Captain's surname appears to be "Warnken" in both signatures, but in the other
two places where his name is given on the list it is spelled "Warneken".
Notes on Passenger Entries (refer to the passenger numbers above; also see Note
below on Kahlgrund hometowns)
5, 7 - Kahl is a town located in northwestern Bavaria (Baiern = Bayern, which
means Bavaria in German); it is named for the Kahl River which drains the
surrounding area, which is known as the Kahlgrund.
8 - The entry in the country line has been croosed out; both the beginning
of "Curh" and a ditto mark are discernible through the strike out.
Transcriber could locate no "Ameneberg" in Germany; there is an
"Amoneburg" with an umlaut over the "o" located about 6 miles east of
Marburg, the hometown of passenger 10.
9 - The transcriber could find no Lutzehausen in Germany listed on Map Quest.
The correct spelling of this town is probably Lutzelhausen; it is located
in Hessen about a mile north of the Bavarian border and about two miles
from Geiselbach (a Kahlgrund town). Surname appears to have a line crossed
over the top part of the "ff", as if at least one of the letters is a "t",
but these letters clearly extend belong the bottom of the line and the
transcriber believes them to be "ff".
10 - First letter of surname is hard to read, but it appears to be "V";
transcriber could find no one with the surname of "Vormuna" in Germany,
but that is what the entry seems to read.
12 - There is an umlaut over the "u" in Budingen.
36-37 - It is virtually impossible for these settlers to have been born in Indiana,
since their age would place their date of birth in about 1804, long before
there was any significant German immigrants in Indiana; in fact, in 1804,
white settlement in Indiana was concentrated in a few places near the Ohio
River as well as a few settlements of French origin, such as Vincennes.
Perhaps "Indiana" in the place of nativity column indicates that these two
passengers had settled in Indiana earlier and were returning there after a
trip back to Germany. It is interesting to note that the number "163" was
written at the end of the captain's certification since there were a total
of 165 passengers, this may indicate that two of them (presumably, 36 and
37) were retuning to the U.S. and not subject to the commutation fee.
Since "Baiern" was entered in the country column, these two passengers
probably originally came from Bavaria, probably one of the towns in the
Kahlgrund from which other passengers came. "Bott" is a common name in the
Kahlgurnd.
38-48 - The transcriber could find no Seilauf in Germany. The correct spelling of
this town is almost certainly "Sailauf," another Kahlgrund town.
43 - Muller has an umlaut over the "u".
45 - Occupation is very faint on the microfilm; the transcriber believes that
the word is "Kaufmann," which means businessman or merchant (someone who
"sells") in German.
46 - Column for sex of passenger was left blank on the original list; it pre-
sumably should be "M".
49-53 - The transcriber could find no Gisselbach in Germany. The correct spelling
of this town is probably Geiselbach.
52 - Second digit of age is not readable--it may be 27.
53 - Age is not readable; probably this is a young child of pasengers 51 & 52.
55 - The transcriber could find no Neusees in Germany. The correct spelling of
this town is probably Neuses, which is located in a portion of Hessen
called the "Freigericht", just across the border from NW Bavaria where
towns like Michelbach and Geiselbach are located.
56-59 - The transcriber could find no Alpstadtin Germany. The correct spelling
of this town is probably "Albstadt"; it is located in NW Bavaria, just
about 1 mile from Neuses.
60-65 - The transcriber could find no Herstein in Germany. The correct spelling
of this town is probably Horstein (with an umlaut over the "o"); it is l
ocated just south of Alzenau in the Kahlgrund.
66 - The surname is difficult to read; it could also be Stadt. There is a
Dettlingen in Baden-Wurttemberg; however, the hometown listed for passenger
66 may have been "Dettingen," which is a Kahlgrund town.
68 - Transcriber could find no Hoffstaden in Germany; there is a "Hofstadten"
(with an umlaut over "a") in the Kahlgrund.
69-70 - Transcriber could find no Wasserlohe in Germany. The correct spelling
is probably Wasserlos, also in the Kahlgrund.
72-75 - Transcriber could find no Sommerbach in Germany. This town may be
"Sommerkahl" in the Kahlgrund.
76 - Transcriber could find no Mainbries in Germany. There is a "Mombris"
(with an umlaut over the "o") in the Kahlgrund.
77 - Transcriber could find no Schildklipen in Germany. This town is almost
certainly Schollkrippen (with an umlaut over the "o"). Last part of
surname and age could not be read because of hole in paper; name could
be Schwarzkopf; another hole is in the column indicating the passenger's
sex--presumably, it should be "M".
78 - Transcriber found no "Wisthal" in Germany. There is a "Wiesthal" about
5 mi SE of Heinrichsthal (see passengers 35 and 80-83). There are 8
Hock listings in the current Wiesthal telephone directory, so Wiesthal
is likely the correct town. Occupation may be "brewer," but word on
manifest clearly has an "o". There is a hole is in the column indicating
the passenger's sex--presumably, it should be "M".
79 - Transcriber could find no Schildklippen in Germany. This town is also
probably Schollkrippen (with an umlaut over the "o"). Occupation is
probably "brewer".
81 - Occupation is probably "brewer".
82-83 - Elsasser has an umlaut over the "a".
84-87 - As indicated in the note to passenger 79, this town is probably
"Schollkrippen" (with an umlaut over the "o").
88-114 - As indicated in the note to passengers 60-65, town is probably Horstein
(with an umlaut over the "o").
101 - First name could be "Franzina."
110-14 - Based on a search of the current German telephone directory for the
Kahlgrund vicinity, the correct spelling of the surname may be "Emmel"
(also see passenger 71).
115-19 - There is no Ammersbach in Germany; town is likely Omersbach (about
4 mi E of next town entry, Michelbach) in the Kahlgrund.
125-28 - As indicated in the immediately preceding note, the town is likley
Omersbach in the Kahlgrund. The surname of passengers 126-28 likely
shoud be spelled "Pfarr"; there are over 60 Pfarrs in the current
German telephone directory for the Kahlgrund (and no "Pfaar" listing).
Page is torn and first name of 127 is difficult to read; it appears
to be "Marg".
134 - This town is likely Krombach in the Kahlgrund. Transcriber could
find no "Kronbach" in Germany.
135 - There is an umlaut over the first "o" in Konigshaven on the ship's
list. However, the transcriber could find no Konigshaven in Germany;
there is a Konigshofen (with an umlaut over the first "o") in the
Kahlgrund.
136-53 - See above note to passenger 134; this town is probably Krombach.
146 - Surname could be "Mager," "g" instead of "y".
147-51 - Surname should probably be spelled "Pfarr". (See note for passengers
126-28 above)
153 - It is not possible to tell whether there is one "n" or two at the end
of the surname.
154 - Gottingen has an umlaut over the "o". It is a city located in northern
Germany, over 100 miles from the Kahlgrund.
155-62 - The transcriber could find no Saltkrippen in Germany. This town is
probably Schollkrippen (with an umlaut over the "o").
163 - The transcriber could find no Geisselbach in Germany. This town is
probably Geiselbach in the Kahlgrund.
164 - Entry in Occupation column is very faint, but appears to be "Barber."
165 - Again, the town is probably Krombach. See Special Note below for more
information about Franz Hessler.
Special Note on Hometowns in the Kahlgrund and on Franz Hessler
About 160 of the 165 passengers on the Alexander were from hometowns in the north-
western corner of Bavaria, in or near an area called the Kahlgrund, or the
adjoining part of Hessen. The Kahlgrund hometowns represented on the Alexander
include: Horstein, Schollkrippen, Krombach, Geiselbach, Michelbach, Omersbach,
Albstadt, Schneppenbach, Sailauf, Wasserlos, Alzenau, Mombris, Konigshofen,
Erlenbach, and Kahl. There are also some towns just south of the Kahlgrund,
such as Heinrichsthal and Wiesthal. The towns located in Hessen just a few miles
north of the Kahlgrund are: Lutzelhausen, Somborn, Gelnhausen, and Neuses.
Franz Hessler (#165) was a distant cousin of the transcriber. Franz settled near
Millhousen, Decatur County, Indiana. He is believed to have had several brothers
(perhaps four) who also came to the United States. The transcriber believes that
Franz Hessler made at least one other trip to the U.S. aboard the Ship Estafette,
which arrived at New York on September 1, 1837.
