Required by the regulations of the Secretary of Commerce and Labor of the United States, under Act of Congress approved February 20, 1907, to be delivered to the United States Immigration Officer by the Commanding Officer of any vessel have such passengers on board upon arrival at a port in the United States.

Personal Notes

My grandfather, Tommaso Mezzanares, was born in Piana dei Greci (now Piana
degli Albanesi). He arrived at age 19 with only $3.00, but had dreams of 
making his fortune in America.  He left behind his parents, Giuseppe
Mezzanares and Rosalia Clementi, and four siblings, Giuseppe, Francesco,
Adriana, and Maria.  In America, he joined his older sister Francesca
and her husband, Salvatore Filpi.  His brother, Francesco, came over in
1923.
 
In 1912, he left for Sacramento, California and no sooner had he gotten
there, he had to go back to Europe, this time as a member of the US Army,
337 Field Artillery Battalion, 91st Division.  He saw service with the
American Expeditionary Force in France, Germany, & Belgium.  He returned
to Sacramento in 1919 and married my grandmother, Callia Chippo (Cippo),
daughter of Antonina Chippo and Mary Mandala, also from Sicily.  A son
was born in 1920, and a daughter in 1922. He had the "American Dream".
He accomplished what he set out to do.
 
In 1920, he opened a shoe repair shop, called "AEF" (for American
Expeditionary Force), located at 1114 10th Street, just a block from the
California State Capitol Building.  He repaired all the governors shoes,
starting with Gov. Richardson.  He was a very successful businessman.  He
and my grandmother were active in many organizations, including Veterans
of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and the Dante Club.  He retired in 1957
and toured all of Europe, including Piana degli Albanesi.  He died in 1967.
