Transcriber's Notes:
The use of an * indicates an omission or error made by the original recorder or is used to
call your attention to additional information in the Transcriber's notes below.
The use of a ? indicates a word or letters that could not be read, due to the quality of
original document.
There were no deaths on this passage, therefore the death column has been eliminated. There
was no birth column, and there is no record of any birth on the voyage.
The following abbreviations were used consistently: Labr, Servt and Hwife. They are
understood to mean Laborer, Servant and Housewife, respectively.
1-5 A bracket to the right of these names indicates that they were "Cabin Passengers."
1-5 The sex was omitted for these five passengers ostensibly because their form of address
reflected their gender, such as "Mr" or "Mrs." Dr. Cullen was probably a male. This could
have been based on the assumption that there were no female physicians. In fact, however,
in 1849, five years before the date of this manifest, Elizabeth Blackwell became the first
woman in the United States to become a physician.
2-3 Ernest and Augusta Kn?tzmar The last name was not entirely legible. The first two letters
appear to be "Kn," however, there is no vowel after the "n" although there is a space.
There is a quotation (") mark under the occupation of Ernest, suggesting that Augusta was
an artist as well.
5 Charles B Smith Jeweler is misspelled.
26 Cath Murphy The first name "Cath" could be an abbreviation for Catherine. If so, the sex
is wrong. However, if the sex is correct, Cath could be an abbreviation for one of several
male Celtic proper names, such as Cathach, Cathair, Cathrae or Cathan among others.
30 John Da?ks The third letter of the last name resembles an "n." However, it might also
be a "u" or "w."
44 John Langan No age was recorded.
49 Thos Wheelan No age was recorded.
54 Benjn Ganther The third letter of the last name might possibly be a "u."
71 ?sten Hickey The first letter of the first name is not clear.
79-80 Jos and Mary Rayn?r The fifth letter of the last name is not clear and could be an "o"
or an "e."
91 ?^m Foley The first letter of the first name is illegible. It lacks the characteristic
form of "W" that other W^m's possess in this manifest.
117 Jas Butl?n The fifth letter of the last name is not legible and could be an "i"
or an "e."
