SS William Penn
I, E. Billings, Master of the SS "W^m Penn", do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect List of all the Passengers taken on board the said SS W^m Penn at London and Havre, from which Port the said SS W^m Penn has now arrived; and that on said List is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said Passengers who have died on said Voyage and the names and ages of those who died. Transcriber's Note: For passengers 1-37 above, in the column headed "Country of which
they intend to become inhabitants", the recorder entered the city or state of the passenger's
destination in the U.S.A.. For passengers 38-298 below, all of whom intend to become
inhabitants of the "U.S.A.", the recorder changed his practice of entering the city or
state of the passenger's destination and entered instead what appears to be the passenger's
"Native Country" or town/region within the country. These entries were later crossed out
and the destination "U.S.A" substituted. However, the original entry is included in this
transcription for it's informational value.

A question mark (?) indicates a letter or a number that cannot be transcribed
definitely.
An asterisk (*) indicates either difficulty in deciphering the handwriting of the
manifest or something in the Transcriber Notes to which the reader should refer.
A caret (^) indicates that the following letter in a word or name is superscripted.
Beginning with passenger number 39, the recorder entered "Laborer" as the occupation
of every passenger whether man, woman or child. It was common practice to enter the
occupation of only adult males and to leave blank those of females and children.
Therefore, a likely interpretation in this manifest is that the occupation "Laborer"

adult male is a "Laborer".
From the different handwriting and various spellings, it is apparent that more than
one recorder listed names of the countries. Notable are "Wurtenberg", "Württenberg"
and "Wurtemberg", "Luxemburg" and "Luxembourg". The spellings of the countries in
this transcription are the same as they appear in the manifest.
10 In the occupation column, the recorded entry appears to be written as "Vet surgeon"
or perhaps "Vel surgeon". There is some slight damage to the manifest in the area
of the destination column causing the third letter to be completely undecipherable.
However, destination is possibly "Basswater" or "Bayswater", in the U.S.A.
15 Surname appears to be "Scheiter" or "Schlüter" with an umlaut above the "u".
25 Passenger's complete name is recorded as "Antonetta Carolina de Jong".
29 Complete entry of passenger's occupation is recorded as "Supt of ???ant".
33-34 All of the recorded entries of these two passengers have been crossed out and
the notation added "Not on Board".
36 Passenger's occupation is poorly written and difficult to decipher, but appears
to be "Councl", perhaps implying "Counsel" or "Consul".
37 Complete entry of passenger's occupation is recorded as "Newspaper correspd".
38 There is no entry recorded for this passenger's Occupation.
44-45 Surname is possibly "Twick", "Tivick" or even "Livick".
92 There is an umlaut above the "u" in surname "Bozenschütz".
93 Surname appears to be either "Hutman" or "Hartman".
104 Surname appears to be either "Chery" or "Chary".
109 Surname is either "Kleindierst" or "Kleindienst".
111 Surname is either "Tien" or "Fien".
112 Surname is possibly "Tonville", "Torville", Forville or "Fonville".

205 Fourth letter in surname had been overwritten so it is difficilt to decipher with
certainty. Name might be "Kleper" or "Klezer".

241 The first "t" in the surname "Andrecetto in not crossed so the name might be

252 Surname might be either Gattinel" or Gottinel".

263 First letter of surname is difficult to decipher. It might be "D" resulting in the

278 A flourish in front of the "k" in the surname may be a "c" resulting in surname

281 Surname is either "Vogt" or "Vagt".
284 Surname is possibly "Eichonlaut", "Eichenlaut", "Eichenlaud" or "Eichonlaud".
286-287 Surname is either "Balzare" or "Balzarc".
289 Surname is possibly "Duleni" or "Decleni"
296 There is an umlaut (") above the "a" in surname "Bräm".
298 Surname might be either "Hertaeb" or "Hertack".
300-301 These 2 passengers were not given passenger numbers; they were bracketed and
outside of the brackets are the words "Not on Board".
The given name of the first passenger might be "Marquant" or "Marquart".
In both the country columns, the recorder has placed a dash, perhaps indicating "same
as above" which in this case would be "England", or that he just didn't know.
302 This passenger appears to have been added to the manifest after the recorder had
totaled the passengers at 297, making him the 298th. The difference in numbers between
his being listed as number 303 and the total of 298 total passengers is attributed to
four of the numbered passengers (33, 34, 300 and 301) not being aboard when the ship
embarked. Although no entry is recorded in the compartment occupied column, this
passenger was likely berthed in a steerage compartment.
