Correspondence 01/30/2004 passengers #29-33 McDowell
My ancestor Hugh McDOWELL was born c.1785 in Raloo, County Antrim, Ireland,
and arrived in Charleston, South Carolina, USA on 15 November 1820 on the
brig Prince Leopold from Belfast. He came with sons John (age 14) &
Thomas (age 7) and daughters Mary (age 5) & Ann (age 3). The family
went to Chester County, SC, where he was a farmer and shoemaker.
Hugh made application for citizenship "for himself and his family"
in 1828 in Chester Co., SC. Hugh and his elder son both died in 1829.
About 1836, Mary married James Jones and Ann married John Downing Jones;
both migrated to Tennessee and Mary later went on to Mississippi. The
fate of son Thomas is unknown at this time.
I would welcome e-mails to Nan Roose from others researching
this family.
