Steamer City of Para

Aspinwall (Colon), USC/Panama to New York
14 July 1884

DISTRICT OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK - PORT OF NEW YORK
I, Levi Dexter, Master of the Steamer City of Para, do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of the City of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board the said vessel at Aspinwall from which Port the said vessel has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, sex, and calling of each of the said passengers, the location of the compartment or space occupied by each during the passage, the country of citizenship of each, and also the destination or location intended by each; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the dates and causes of death, and the names and ages of those who died; also of the pieces of baggage of each; also a true statement, so far as it can be ascertained, with reference to the intention of each alien passenger as to a projected sojourn in this country. So help me God. (signed) Levi Dexter, Master. Sworn to this July 14, 1884, Before me. (signed) ?????????.
List or Manifest of ALL THE PASSENGERS taken on board the Steamer City of Para whereof Levi Dexter is Master, from Aspinwall, burthen 2504 and 88/100 tons.
Columns represent: given name and surname, age, sex, calling, the country of which they are citizens, intended destination or location, location of compartment or space occupied, number of pieces of baggage and whether a transient or in transit or intending a protracted sojourn. Since no one died during the voyage, that column was omitted in this transcription.

Transcriber's Notes:

An asterisk (*) indicates either difficulty in deciphering the handwriting of the
manifest or something that the reader should note.

A question mark (?) indicates a letter or a number that can not be transcribed
  definitely.

The recorder wrote braces that grouped the names of passengers traveling together,
  which included the following passengers: {3,4,5}, {8,9}, {16,17}, {21,22}, {30,31},
  and {43-48}.

The recorder wrote "Male" or "Female" for the Sex of the passenger, which the
transcribers have abbreviated as "M" or "F" for formatting reasons.

The recorder often abbreviated passenger's Calling by writing "Mcnt" or "Mercht"
for "Merchant" and "Servt" for "Servant, but the transcribers have included the
  unabbreviated Calling for clarity.

9 Second digit of Age is only partially visible, but Age is likely 30 or 31.
17 Initials and surname are both very faint and only partially visible, but surname
appears to begin "Mor". Since the recorder has drawn a brace to combine passengers
Nos. 16 and 17, one might conclude that these passengers were related, as were all
the other passengers combined by braces drawn by the recorder.
18 Surname appears to be either "Montrjo" or "Montyo".
32 Calling is very faint, but is likely "Doctor".
33 Calling is very faint, but is likely though not definitely "Clerk".
34 Surname appears to be written as "Anger", but might possibly be "Auger".
48 Surname is too faint to decipher with certainty, but might possibly be Jackson.
Calling is faint, but might be "Servt", implying "Servant".
49 Calling is too faint to decipher, but first letter is "S" followed by one
or two letters too faint to decipher, followed by "ly".
54 Surname is too faint to decipher definitely, but might possibly be "Dal?ress"
     or "Dabruss".
56 Surname is possibly "McCarty", "McCarpy" or "McCarky".
60 Surname is too faint to decipher, but the first letters are "Dar" followed by
two letters which are not decipherable. Surname is possibly "Darty", "Darby"
     or "Darth".
63 Age is obliterated by an ink blot.
67 Surname is too faint to decipher or even to count the number of letters.
74-76 These persons were likely to be crew members as they had no luggage and were
from the U.S.A.. Compartment occupied is not clear, but there might be very
faint ditto marks indicating "Forward Cabin", or as possible crew memmbers, they
might have been berthed elsewhere and the location not recorded.
77 An entirely different script was used for this entry likely made by a second
recorder. Surname is not clear. First letters of surname are definitely "Ai"
followed by two letters which might be "rd" or "ri" or something similar.
Surname is possibly "Aird" or "Airi". Entries, if any were recorded for this
passenger's native country, destination, location of compartment and whether a
transient, in transit or intending a protracted sojourn, are too faint to decipher.
Although it is not recorded, it is possible that this person was a stowaway.
