I, James Guard, Master of the SS Nebraska, do solemnly, sincerely, and truly declare that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect List of all the Passengers taken on board the said Vessel at L'pool and Queenstown, from which Port the said Vessel has now arrived; and that on said List is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said Passengers who have died on said Voyage, and the names and ages of those who died. Steerage No Transcriber's Notes: A question mark (?) indicates a letter or a number that can not be transcribed definitely. A caret (^) indicates that the following letter in a word or name is superscripted. An asterisk (*) indicates either difficulty in deciphering the handwriting of the manifest or something in the Transcriber Notes to which the reader should refer. The transcribers numbered the passengers consecutively even though they are not numbered in the original manifest. The recorder of the manifest often abbreviates given names by writing the first few letters of the name, then skipping letters and then writing the final letter as superscripted. In these cases, the transcribers use the symbol (^) to indicate that the following letter is superscripted, i.e., Tho^s for Thomas, Sam^l for Samuel, W^m for William, "Mich^l" or "M^l" for Michael, "Marg^t for Margaret, etc. The recorder of the manifest often abbreviates a passenger's Occupation, such as "Gent" for Gentleman, "Labr" for Laborer, "Matn" for Matron and "Spin" for Spinster. Furthermore, with the exception of the few "Gent" entries for occupations of Cabin class passengers, the occupation of every adult passenger is recorded as "Labr", and while undoubtedly many of these are indeed Laborers, it challenges the imagination to believe that not a single Farmer, Merchant, Clerk, Baker or other occupation is included among the passengers. In the transcriber's opinion, the recorder listed all adult males as "Labr" as a convenience, and consequently the designation "Labr" likely does not accurately depict these passengers' actual occupations. The entry "United States" in the destination column is shortened to "U.S.A." for formatting reasons. "Male" and "Female" in the Sex column is shortened to "M" and "F" for the same reason. 9-10 Surname is possibly "Scheuffer", "Schueffer", "Schaeffer" or something similar. 11 Surname is possibly "Blessent", "Blessend" or "Blessint". 18 First letter of given name is too faint to decipher with certainty, but name is possibly "Lemon". 19 Surname is possibly "Teigle" or "Tugle". 26 Surname appears to be either "Jerry" or "Jeny". 27-34 Surname is either "Kille" or "Kelle". 44 Surname appears to be either "Keusth", "Keusk", "Reusth" or "Reusk". 46 Surname is "Kustan", "Kustau" or "Kustard". 48 Given name is either "Wenkle" or "Winkle". 58 Surname appears to be "Imku", "Sunku" or "Junku". 60 Letters of given name are not clearly formed and impossible to decipher with certainty, but name appears to be "Elenno" or "Elunno". 68-69 Surname is either "Campana" or "Campano". 71 Surname is possibly "Cirira", "Cirera", "Cerera" or "Cerira". 90-91 Surname is possibly "Louz", "Louy", "Lonz" or "Lony". 92-95 Surname is possibly "Brougue", "Brongue", "Brouque" or "Bronque". 96 Surname is possibly "Berthet", "Berket", "Bertheh" or "Berkeh". 97 Surname is either "Beldetem" or "Beldetein". 100 Surname is either "Fruch" or "Frueh". 103 Surname is possibly "Selberer", "Silberer" or "Sellerer". 104 Surname is either "Brouner" or "Bronner". 116 Surname is either "Deutuer" or "Dentuer". 125 Surname is either "Trumpf" or "Frumpf". 127 Surname is either "Holzenger" or "Holtzenger". 128 Middle letters of surname are not decipherable with certainty, but surname is possibly "Lowian", "Louian", "Lowean", "Loisian" or "Loward". 130 Surname is possibly "Trowller" or "Tromller". 133-134 Correction: Surname is recorded as "Moreant" but was actually "Morian". Passengers #131-139 are my ancestors. Change footnote 133-134 to read: Surname transcribed as "Moreant" but was actually "MORIAN". Passenger #133 is my great-grandfather Ferdinand Morian. He came to the USA with his younger brother, an uncle and his family, his grandmother and an aunt and her husband. These people are: Uncle Nicolas Demmer (#136), Nicolas’ wife Madeline (#137), their daughter Madeline (#138) and their infant son Ferdinand (#139). My great-grandfather Ferdinand’s grandmother was Madeline Greiner (#135). His aunt was Reine Greiner (#132) and her husband was Pierre Greiner (#131). All of these people settled in Clinton Township, Macomb County, Michigan and can be found there in the 1870 US Census. Ferdinand married Anna Robace and they lived in Centerline, Michigan in the 1880’s. They are both buried in Centerline’s St. Clement’s Cemetery.
