SS Lessing
I, B. Voss, Master of the German S.S. Lessing, do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of the City of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board the said Lessing at Hamburg and Havre from which Port the said Lessing has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, sex, and calling of each of the said passengers, the location of the compartment or space occupied by each during the passage, the country of citizenship of each, and also the destination or location intended by each; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the dates and causes of death, and the names and ages of those who died; also of the pieces of baggage of each; also a true statement, so far as it can be ascertained, with reference to the intention of each alien passenger as to a projected sojourn in this country. So help me God. (signed) ?????????, Master. Sworn to this 7 July 1884, Before me. (signed) ?????????.
List or Manifest of ALL THE PASSENGERS taken on board the ???????? whereof (blank) is Master, from ???????, burthen ???? tons.
Columns represent: given name and surname, age, sex, calling, the country of which they are citizens, location of compartment or space occupied, number of pieces of baggage and whether a transient or in transit or intending a protracted sojourn. Since the recorded destination of every passenger was the "United States" and no one died during the voyage, these two columns are omitted in this transcription.

Transcribers' Notes:
Although there are sections of the manifest which are quite readable, the writing in
other places has become so faint as to be virtually invisible. Even though the
transcription was done with deliberate care, some passenger information such as names,
ages, destinations, etc. were too faint to be transcribed and are indicated by "?".
An asterisk (*) indicates either difficulty in deciphering the handwriting of the
manifest or something in the footnotes to which the reader should refer.
A question mark (?) indicates a letter or a number that can not be transcribed
definitely.
A caret (^) indicates that the following letter in a word or name is superscripted.
The transcribers numbered all the passengers consecutively 1 through 551, but the one
who recorded the original manifest numbered the 1st Cabin passengers from 1 through 24,
and the Steerage passengers from 1 through 527.
The recorder of the manifest often abbreviated given names by writing only the first few
letters of the name, followed sometimes by a period but many times without it. For some
names the recorder abbreviated it by writing the first few letters then skipping letters
and then writing the final letter as superscripted. In these cases, the transcribers use
the symbol (^) to indicate that the following letter was superscripted, i.e., Fried^k for
Friederick, Magd^a for Magdelena, and Joh^e for Johanne, etc.
The recorder often listed the compartment occupied as "U.C." for "Upper Compartment" or
as "Cajt" or "Cjt", an abbreviation for Cajüte or Kajüte (modern spelling), which is a
nautical term describing a ship's cabin. It might be that for Steerage Class passengers
it denotes those who had their own, separate space, as opposed to others occupying larger
shared spaces.
In the column for entering whether the passenger is a transient, in transit or intending
a protracted sojourn, the only entries which the recorder entered were "Transient"
and left all the others blank. The transcribers' interpretation is that all the passengers
not specifically designated as "Transient" were intending to remain in the U.S.A..
281 Although written as "Franzisa", given name is likely "Franziska".
294 Country of citizenship appears to be written "?a?an".
295 First letter of surname is impossible to decipher with certainty, but is likely either
"F" or "K" resulting in possible surname "Fonnenberg" or "Konnenberg".
297-298 "Transient" is recorded, but very faintly.
301 Third letter of surname is not clearly written so surname is possibly "Spenholz",
"Spanholz" or "Spunholz".
302 Middle letters of surname have been overwritten and as a result are not decipherable
with any certainty. Actual Calling entry is "Instrument Maker".
314 Country of Citizenship is written as either "Bavary" or "Bovary".
317 Surname appears to be either "Wittarf" or "Witturf".
320 Given name is feminine yet sex is listed as Male.
321 Calling is too faint to decipher, but is possibly though not certainly "Taylor".
324 There is an umlaut over the "u" in surname "Prunfels".
325-326 Heavy horizontal lines are drawn through the entries for these two passengers
making the information undecipherable. The reason for the lines in not clear to the
transcribers, but this usually means that the passengers were not aboard when the
ship embarked.
328 Although recorded as "Salomon", given name is likely "Solomon".
329 Surname is possibly "Kolikoesky" or "Kolikossky".
331 Surname is too faint to decipher with certainty, but possibly begins with "K" and ends
with "ky".
332 Surname is too faint to decipher with certainty, but appears to begin with "Marih" or
"March" followed by about four letters which are not decipherable.
333 First two or three letters of surname are too faint to decipher.
345 Given name is possibly "Max" or "Mas". Umlaut over the "o" in surname "Shnopfer".
Only the "T" is visible in the last column, so passenger is possibly a "Transient".
346 There is an umlaut above the "a" in surname "Schrader".
347 Passenger is from Hassen-Nassan, Prussia.
353 There is an umlaut above the "u" in surname "Schutt".
357 Given name begins "Sim" followed by two or three letters which are too faint to
decipher, but the last of these letters is possibly "h".
364 Age is not decipherable due to damage to the manifest in this area.
370 Age is not entirely decipherable due to damage to the manifest in this area.
371 The second and third letters of surname are not clearly formed, but surname is
possibly "Surgens".
372 Calling appears to be either "Casketmaker" or Basketmaker".
374 Surname is either "Michael" or "Mickael".
375-381 Country of citizenship is very faint, but appears as "?an????k", and is possibly
though not certainly "Danemark".
381 First few letters of surname are poorly formed and cannot be deciphered with certainty,
but surname appears to begin with "M" or "N" followed by one, two or possibly three
letters impossible to decipher, but one is likely "i" since there is a dot above. Last
part of surname is more clearly written as "laysen". Surname is possibly "Mirslaysen",
"Nirslaysen" or something similar.
383-387 Country of citizenship appears to be written as "Preussen", yet the list goes onto
the next page with more members of the Voss family where their country of citizenship
is clearly recorded as "Prussia".
384 Surname appears to be either "Gottwald" or "Gottwold".
400 Umlaut (ü) over the u in surname "Muller".
402 Surname appears to be either "Walleiten" or "Wallesten".
403-405 First letter of surname is unclear, but is possibly "d" or "s", resulting in
possible surname "Drangelius" or "Srangelius".
406 Surname is either "Arenowitz" or "Aronowitz".
408 First part of surname is not clear, but surname is possibly "Dosnutzky", "Dusnutzky",
"Susnutzky" or "Sosnutzky".
411-415 Surname appears to be either "Sakofatty", "Sahvfatty" or "Sahofatty".
422 Letters of given name are poorly formed and cannot be deciphered with certainty, but
the name resembles "Babaira". There is an umlaut (ü) over the u in surname "Schuler".
434 There is a mark, perhaps an umlaut ("), above the "o" in surname "Eckhofer".
441 Surname appears to be either "Roas", or "Roos" with an umlaut above each "o".
443 Surname is either "Jansson" or "Jonsson".
449 Surname appears to be either "Zanesky", "Zaresky" or "Zarecky".
475 Letters of names are poorly formed and cannot be deciphered with certainty. Surname
is possibly "Saadlmeier" or "Sandlmeier".
491 No entries were made, or are visible, for passenger's Age, Calling and Country of
citizenship, and the reason is not indicated.
501 Surname is possibly "Boob", "Baab" or "Boab".
502 Surname is possibly "Santo", "Danto", "Sanko" or "Danko".
506 Age is too faint to decipher.
507 Given name is possibly "Iwa" or "Ewa".
509 There is an umlaut over the "u" in surname "Muller". Calling has been overwritten
and is difficult to decipher, but clearly begins with "F" and ends with "er".
524-529 The complete entry for country of citizenship for everyone in this family is
"Liebau, Russia".
530 Calling is faint and cannot be deciphered.
531 Calling is too faint to decipher with certainty, but appears to be written as
"organer", perhaps and organist, or "cigarm", perhaps an abbreviation for "Cigarmaker".
534 Last letters of surname are too faint to decipher with certainty, but surname is
possibly "Kobylowitz" or "Kobylamitz" or something similar.
535 Last letters of surname are too faint to decipher.
540 Last letters of given name are too faint to decipher with certainty, but the name is
likely "Mathilde".
541-542 Surname is possibly "Suhr" or "Sutr".
548 There is an umlaut (ü) over the u in "Muller".
553-555 The last part of surname is in an area of damage to the manifest rendering it
difficult to decipher with any certainty, but surname is possibly "Larana" or "Laraner".
554 Given name is difficult to decipher, but is possibly though not certainly "Maria".
557 Surname appears to be either "Hordlein" or "Hortlein".
560 Calling is too faint to decipher with certainty, but is possibly "Student".
