Barkentine Huntress

Nevis Island, Lesser Antilles, West Indies to New York
15 July 1884

DISTRICT OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK - PORT OF NEW YORK
I, John Gunn, Master of the Br. Bktin "Huntress", do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of the City of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board the said vessel at Nevis, W.I. from which Port the said vessel has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and the calling of each of said passengers, and location of compartment or space occupied by each during the passage, the country of citizenship of each, and also the destination or location intended by each; and that the said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on the said voyage, and the dates and causes of death, and the names and ages of those who died; also of the pieces of baggage of each; also a true statement, so far as it can be ascertained, with reference to the intention of each alien passenger as to a projected sojourn in this country. So help me God. (signed) John Gunn. Sworn to this 15th July 1884, before me. (signed) ?????????.
List or Manifest of ALL THE PASSENGERS taken on board the Br. Bk. "Huntress" whereof John Gunn is Master, from Nevis, W.I., burthen 227 tons.
Columns represent: given name and surname, age, sex, calling, the country of which they are citizens, intended destination or location, location of compartment or space occupied and whether a transient, in transit or intending a protracted sojourn. The number of pieces of baggage is listed below the manifest in the Passenger Notes for formatting reasons. Since no one died during the voyage, that column was omitted in this transcription.

    1* William Thurstom 36 Male Gent Nevis-WI U.S. 1st-Cabin P.S.
    2* Mrs W'm Thurstom 37 Female Gent Nevis-WI U.S. 1st-Cabin P.S.
    3* Clarence Thurstom 10 Male Child Nevis-WI U.S. 1st-Cabin P.S.
    4* Helen Huggins 48 Female Lady Nevis-WI U.S. 1st-Cabin P.S.

    Transcriber's Note:

The abreviations "Br" and "Bktin" before the name of the ship likely means that the
ship was a Barkentine (or Barquentine) of British ownership or registry.

An asterisk (*) indicates either difficulty in deciphering the handwriting of the
manifest or something that the reader should note.

A question mark (?) indicates a letter or a number that can not be transcribed
    definitely.

"P.S." entered in the column asking whether a transient, in transit or intending
a protracted sojourn likely means "Protracted Sojourn".

1-3 Last letters of surname are not clearly formed. Surname is possibly "Thurstom",
"Thurstorn" or "Thurston". Family baggage listed included: 2-Boxes, 1-Jar, 1-Trunk,
      1-Chair and 2-Beds.
 4 Baggage included: 2-Trunks, 1-Box and 1-Hand Bag.

National Archives and Records Administration, Film M237, Reel 478, List 882.
