Steamer Gulf Stream

Havana, Cuba to New York
9 March 1868

DISTRICT OF NEW YORK - PORT OF NEW YORK
I, John G Bates, Master of the Steamer Gulf Stream, do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect List of all the Passengers taken on board the said Steamer at Havana, from which Port the said Steamer has now arrived; and that on said List is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said Passengers who have died on said Voyage, and the names and ages of those who died. So help me God. (Signature) John G Bates.
Sworn to this March 9th 1868,
Before me. (Signature) W ? C?????y

Transcriber's Notes:

A question mark (?) indicates a letter or a number that can not be transcribed
 definitely.

An asterisk (*) indicates either difficulty in deciphering the handwriting of
the manifest or something in the Transcriber Notes to which the reader should
 refer.

The transcribers numbered the passengers consecutively 1-7 even though the
recorder of the manifest did not number the passengers.

For some unknown reason, the recorder of the manifest did not record the Sex
of female passengers. The Sex of female passengers, however, is apparent from
the titles of "Mrs" or "Miss" entered with the names.

1-2 Last letters of surname are not clearly formed and therefore impossible
to decipher with certainty. Surname clearly begins "Date" followed by one
poorly formed letter which might possibly be "r".
3 Passengers Occupation is not clearly written, but begins with "Sp", contains
an "s" and a "te" but the other letters are too poorly formed to decipher.
Occupation is likely though not certainly "Spinster".
4 Surname clearly begins "Leff" followed by either "eets" or "uts". Surname
   is possibly "Lefeets" or "Lefuts".
5 Surname is possibly "Periere", "Percere", "Perure", "Pirure", "Piriere" or
   "Pircere".
6 Surname clearly begins "Benjam" but the following letters are too poorly
formed to decipher. Name is likely "Benjamin".
7 Although written as "Johese", surname might possibly be a poorly written
   "Jones".
