Transcriber's Notes:
The column for recording whether the passenger was a transient or in transit or intending
protracted sojourn was ommitted because all the passengers except two were intending a
protracted sojourne in the U.S.A. Passenger #43 was listed as a transient and passenger #189
was listed as a visitor. Since no one died during the voyage, that column too was omitted in
this transcription.
An asterisk (*) indicates either difficulty in deciphering the handwriting
of the manifest or something that the reader should note.
A question mark (?) indicates a letter or a number that can not be
transcribed definitely.
* Although recorded in this manifest as "Schjenenlick", the Captain's surname is given as
"Schjerbeck" in other references. (See Historical Note at bottom of Transcriber Notes below).
* Although left blank in this manifest, the SS Geiser's tonnage was 2,831 tons gross,
1,993 under deck and 1,818 net.
301 Age is partially obscurred by an ink smear but appears to be "11" but could be "14".
306 Given name likely is "Ida" even though clearly written as "Idda".
309 Accent mark (-) above the vowel "u" in given name Gustav.
311 Accent mark (-) above the vowel "u" in surname Sagstuen.
313 Accent mark (-) above the vowel "u" in given name Hulda.
314 Surname appears to be "Boding", but could be "Borling" or "Bocling".
315 Accent mark (-) above the vowel "u" in surname Gulbrandsen.
317 Accent mark (-) above the vowel "u" in surname Amundsen.
333 Given name is "Mavis" or "Maris".
334 Given name is "Johannes" or "Johanne". Accent mark (-) above the vowel "u" in
surname Iversrud.
338 and 339 Accent mark (-) above the vowel "u" in Paulsen.
345 and 346 The Calling is likely "Sailor" even though clearly recorded as "Saylor".
348 Individual letters in surname are difficult to decipher with any certainty
because the manifest is damaged in this area and barely readable. Surname is
probably meant to be Thorstensdatter.
349-357 Individual letters in surname are difficult to decipher with any certainty
because the manifest is damaged in this area and barely readable. Entry in
number of pieces of baggage is also unreadable for the same reason.
353 Accent mark (-) above the vowel "u" in given name Rudolf.
358 Accent mark (-) above the vowel "u" in given name Oluf.
360 Surname is "Glarum" or "Glarums".
362 Accent mark (-) above the vowel "u" in given name Ludvig.
364 Accent mark (-) above the vowel "u" in given name Rasmus.
366 Accent marks (-) above all three vowels "u" in given name Augustinus.
368 Accent mark (-) above the vowel "u" in given name Paul.
373 Vowels in surname are not clearly written. Surname appears to be "Kinnemann",
but could be "Kannemann", "Kennemann" or even "Kinnenanis".
374 Given name appears to be "Omino", but could be "Amino".
378 Given name is "Anne" or June".
381 Accent mark (") above the vowel "o" in given name Jorgen.
383 The manifest is damaged in this area making the age is unreadable.
384 The manifest is damaged in this area making the number of pieces of baggage unreadable.
In 1884, Larimore was in Dakota Territory, but now in the state of South Dakota.
385 In 1884, Sanborn was in Dakota Territory, but now in the state of North Dakota.
386 Surname appears to be "Unnundal", but could be "Unnesdal".
387 The "M" entry in the Sex column is likely a recording error because "Ingeborg" is
a femine name, her Calling is listed as "Girl" and she is accommodated in the
"Female Department".
388 Accent mark (") above the vowel "a" in surname Bardsen. Accommodation in the
"Female Department" must have been a recording error as the passenger is listed
as "Male" and his Calling as "Farmer".
389, 391 and 392. Surname could possibly be "Gabrielsen".
391 The recording of "Son" in the Calling column is likely a recording error because
"Anne" is a feminine given name and sex is listed a "F".
392 Although clearly written as "Gobriel" the given name is likely "Gabriel".
395 Although not listed or indicated, surname is likely "Olsen" since listed as daughter
of passenger 394, Maline Olsen. Furthermore, both "Inga" and "Olava" are common
given names, whereas "Olava" is not usually a surname.
397 Given name could be "Gunda" or "Gesirda".
Historical Note [extracted from The Solem, Swiggum & Austheim Emigration Ship Index website]
The "SS Geiser" was built at Copenhagen for the Thingvalla Line. Her tonnage was 2,831 tons
gross, 1,993 under deck and 1,818 net. She was 324.4 feet long, of iron construction and
had a service speed of 11 knots. There was accommodation for 50 1st class passengers, 50
2nd class passengers, and 900 3rd class passengers (steerage). The Geiser was launched in
August 1881. She sailed from Copenhagen on her maiden voyage to Christiania (Oslo),
Christiansand and New York on 10th January 1882 and continued on this service her last voyage.
On 14th August 1888, while homeward bound from New York, she was in collision with her sister
ship the "Thingvalla" and sank with the loss of 105 lives. A vivid description of the disaster
is available at: Wrecks/Thingvalla and at Wrecks/Geiser
