From: Sherry Konecny
Corrections to passengers #351-354 surname: KAMCNZ should be KONECNY
My name is Sherry Konecny and I am the great grand daughter of Franz and Josefa Konecny.
My brother Lawrence Konecny has done much research on the arrival of Franz and
Josefa Konecny. You might recognize his name for he is the author of "Perilous Voyages"
which speaks of the Czech immigartion to America.
Arnost Konecny was the son of Franz and Josefa.
Anna Konecny was the mother of Franz.
They indeed came in on the SS Frankfurt, 27 Apr 1881. The excerpt below is part of the
documentation on Franz and Josefa's journey. I have also include a picture of Franz and Josefa.
"Saturday, April 16, 1881, the Frankfurt arrived at Cape Henry, an outer port for the
Chesapeake Bay and gave signals to the observer. A pilot boat came out with a bay
pilot for the trip to Baltimore. Captain Klugkist gave information concerning the health
of his ship as required. Arrival information to be telegraphed ahead to the steamship
agent at Baltimore was also given. The Frankfurt departed Cape Henry headed for Baltimore
and Ohio Railroad piers at Locust Point.
The steamship Frankfort arrived at Locust Point on Easter Sunday morning, April 17, 1881.
The day started out clear and brisk at 44 degrees. By 9:00 a.m. the day had turned cloudy
with a cool breeze and by afternoon had warmed to 64 degrees. There were no religious
services held for this people on this most holy day. Yet, the sun, as it rose above the
horizon, shown upon the many faces affixed in prayer that early morn. There were now only
1,347 immigrant passengers, 846 destined to go west on the Baltimore and Ohio railroad
and 499 would continue to New Orleans aboard the Frankfurt. The Konecny family was of the
latter group. They remained on deck watching the commotion below.
Monday, April 18, 1881 started out slightly milder at 47 degrees warming to 58 degrees
in the afternoon hours. The Frankfurt received clearance to leave and departed Baltimore
late that evening. Captain Klugkist returned the pilot to Cape Henry. The signal officer
at that station reported the Frankfurt as passing out, bound for New Orleans, at 12:10
p.m. on Tuesday, April 19, 1881.
Friday, April 22, 1881, the Frankfurt passed the eastbound bark Freihandel, of Bremen,
at latitude 30:53 north, longitude 76:31 west. The Konecny family had now been
aboard the Frankfurt twenty four days.
Havana was the next stop for the Frankfurt. The steamers and barks bringing immigrants to
New Orleans and Texas ports were required to stop outside the bar at Havana and remain
until inspected by the United States Consul at this port. No exact date has been located
for this stop. It can be deduced that it occurred Sunday, April 24, 1881, and lasted
for one half day. The signal officer reported that the steamship departed this port at
6:00 a.m. The winds were slight and temperatures varied from the mid-sixties in the
morning to the high-seventies that evening.
Port Eads was located at the mouth of th Mississippi River and was the outer port of
New Orleans. The ocean going vessels would stop at Port Eads to acquire a pilot as in the
cases of other outer ports previously mentioned. The Frankfurt arrived at Port Eads on
Tuesday, April 26, 1881. After receiving a pilot, she commenced the 100 mile journey
up the Mississippi River to New Orleans.
The Frankfurt arrived at New Orleans on Tuesday night. Most of the immigrant passengers
were fast asleep, including the Konecny family. Steam tugs were used to position the
Frankfurt at berth 43, district 4, described as the head of St Mary Street.
Wednesday, April 27, 1881, was the Konecny family's official arrival date in the United States."
Submitted by Sherry Konecny.
Historical Note:
The SS Frankfurt was built in 1869 for North German Lloyd of Bremen by Caird & Co,
Greenock, Scotland. She was a 2,582 gross ton ship, length 300ft x beam 39ft, clipper
stem, one funnel, two masts (rigged for sail), iron construction, single screw and a
speed of 10 knots. There was capacity for 30-1st and 600-3rd class passengers.
Launched on 18th Jun.1869 for the Bremen - New Orleans service, but she started her
first voyage from Bremen to Havre and New York on 30th Jun.1870. She was laid up
during the Franco-Prussian War and then between 1871-1874 was mainly employed on
the New Orleans service, but also made six round voyages to New York during this
period. In 1880 her engines were compounded and she commenced her last North Atlantic
voyage between Bremen and Baltimore on 8th Mar.1882. Subsequently she sailed between
Bremen and South America, starting her final voyage on 30th Sep. 1893.
In 1894 she was sold to Sir W. G. Armstrong, Mitchell & Co, shipbuilders, in part
payment for two new ships. Sold to Italian owners in 1895, she was scrapped in Italy
in 1897.
