Steamship Eider
I, W'm Willigerod, Master of the Steamship "Eider", do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of the City of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board the said Steamship Eider at Bremen and Southampton from which Port the said Steamship Eider has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, sex, and calling of each of the said passengers, the location of the compartment or space occupied by each during the passage, the country of citizenship of each, and also the destination or location intended by each; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the dates and causes of death, and the names and ages of those who died; also of the pieces of baggage of each; also a true statement, so far as it can be ascertained, with reference to the intention of each alien passenger as to a projected sojourn in this country. Transcriber's Notes:
This ship's manifest is in very poor condition. The pages have broken apart into as
many as eight separate fragments and have been taped or pasted together again.
Fragments of some pages are missing and where passenger data are missing, the absent
information is indicated by "?".
Although there are sections of the manifest which are quite readable, the writing in
other places has become so faint as to be virtually invisible. Even though the
transcription was done with deliberate care, some passenger information such as names,
ages, destinations, etc. were too faint to be transcribed and are indicated by "?????".
An asterisk (*) indicates either difficulty in deciphering the handwriting of the
manifest or something that the reader should note.
A question mark (?) indicates a letter or a number that can not be transcribed
definitely.
In the citizenship and destination columns, where the recorder entered "U. St. of A.",
the transcrbers have substituted "U.S.A." for formatting reasons.
In the column for transient, in transit or intending a protracted sojourn, where the
recorder entered "Int. Protracted Sojourn", the transcribers have substituted
the word "Permanent" for formatting reasons.
The transcribers numbered all the passengers consecutively 1 through 291, but the one
who recorded the original manifest numbered the 1st Cabin passengers from 1 through 77,
the 2nd Cabin passengers from 1 through 81 and Steerage passengers from 1 through 133.

5 Damage to manifest makes deciphering the Age difficult, but Age is likely 1 ot 7.
7 Surname is very faint, but appears to be either "Eisig" or "Eing".
12 Last letter of given name is unclear, but appears to be "k". Name is possibly
"Minnk" or "Minnak".
27 Given name appears to be "Jule", but there is a diagonnal line across the "l"
where the recorder may have intended a "t" for "Jute".
29-30 Surname appears to be either "Quintin" or "Quentin".
33 Age is very faint, but might possibly be 10.
38 Given name appears to be either "Lelia" or "Lelja". Manifest is damaged in this
area, but passenger's Age appears to be either 1 or 7.
42 Surname clearly begins "Sh" followed by several letters that are too faint to
decipher followed by either "s" or "t" followed by "gen".
43-44 Surname appears to be either "Holzminster' or "Holzmuister".
56 Age is very faint, but is likely 45, or maybe 43.
58 Second digit of Age is too faded decipher with certainty, but might be 13 or 18.
60 Given name is clearly written "Chris." followed a letter or letters which are too
faint to decipher. Age is too faint to decipher.
61 Age is too faint to decipher.
63 Surname is too faint to decipher, but appears to end in "s".
64 Surname is faint, but appears to be either "Hebard" or "Heband".
65 Manifest is damaged in this area, but Age might possibly be 21 or 27.
66-77 The writing in this area of the manifest is very faint and sometimes not visible.
The transcribed information is uncertain and should be viewed with some skepticism.
87 There is an umlaut (") above the "a" in surname.
88-105 The writing in this area of the manifest is very faint and sometimes not visible.

98 Given name appears to be either "Heim" or "Heinr.", an abbreviation for "Heinrick".
Age is faint, but appears to be either 40 or 70.
100 Surname appears to be either "Branthmann", "Brauthmann" or even "Wanthmann". Age is
very faint, but might be 50 or 55.
115 First letter of Calling is not clear, but Calling might possibly be "Tinman".
122-129 The writing in this area of the manifest is so faint that much of the writing is

137-138 Complete entry for Calling is "Sister of Charity".

252 There appears to be an umlaut above the "o" in the surname.
255 There appears to be an umlaut above the "u" in the surname.
