I, J.T. Smith, Master of the City of Rio de Janeiro do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of San Francisco, is a full and perfect list of all Chinese passengers taken on board the said vessel at Hong Kong from which port said vessel has now arrived, or that have been taken on board the said vessel at any foreign port or place, and of all such passengers now on board said vessel, and that on said List is truly designated the names and other particulars, as shown by their respective certificates.So help me God. Question marks replace illegible information or letters.
The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there is a system of numbering the manifests that is a part of the National
Archives file system on Chinese persons. These numbers are included in the identification
of the film and reel numbers below.
For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1895 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case O'Leary).
Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Landing Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were
probably allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives
should have a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Landing Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).
For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)
The following columns had no entries and are not included in the table:

Complexion
Color of Eyes
Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification
No of Certificate is crossed out and replaced by No of Ticket.
Occupation is recorded as Grocer for all passengers except number 65.
Last Place of Residence has been crossed out and replaced by Destination.
Salina Cruz is on the Pacific coast of Mexico. Bluefields is on the Caribbean coast of
Nicaragua. Demerara is in Guyana.
The difference between the Captain's total number of passengers and the transcribed number
is probably the passenger recorded as "not on board." The differences between the Captain's
totals and transcribed totals are in passengers destined for the US and for Salina Cruz so
passengers where destination is missing were bound for one of these two places. (46-48 & 58)
According to the National Archives branch in San Bruno, California it is possible that they have
some information on any Chinese passenger who arrived in San Francisco after 1886.
2-5 Departed per SS Acapulco July 8, 1895.
7-9,51-54,58-61,68-69 Departed per SPRR July 9, 1895. This is probably
Southern Pacific Railroad.
25 There is an upswing at the end of the first name that could be Louis.
29,56 The destinations of these two passengers are probably in Monterey Co. Calif.
47-48 The right half of the page is not legible for these two passengers.
63 Second name is King or Hing.
65 Occupation is "with his brother #64."
80 After the Transit List number "Per China Aug ?,1895" is written. Perhaps this
passenger was not landed since the China sailed to and from China and Japan.
