SS City of Baltimore
I, Robert Leitch, Master of the /SS/ "City of Baltimore", do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect List of all the Passengers taken on board the said /SS/ "City of Baltimore" at Liverpool and Q'town, from which Ports the said City of Baltimore has now arrived; and that on said List is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said Passengers who have died on said Voyage, and the names and ages of those who died. Transcriber's Notes:
A question mark (?) indicates a letter or a number that can not be transcribed
definitely.
An asterisk (*) indicates either difficulty in deciphering the handwriting of
the manifest or something in the Transcriber Notes to which the reader should
refer.
A caret (^) indicates that the following letter in a word or name is
superscripted.
The transcriber numbered the passengers even though they are not numbered in
the original manifest.
The recorder of the manifest often abbreviates given names by writing the first
few letters of the name, then skipping letters and then writing the final
letter as superscripted. In these cases, the transcriber uses the symbol (^)
to indicate that the following letter is superscripted, i.e., Mich^l or M^l for
Michael, Tho^s for Thomas, W^m for William, etc. Othertimes, the recorder
abbreviates names by writing the first few letters, skipping letters and then
adding the final letter of the name, i.e., Michl or Ml for Michael, Patk for
Patrick, Margt or Mgt for Margaret, Bgt for Bridget, etc.. The recorder also
uses common abbreviations for given names such as Jno for John and Hy for
Henry.
In writing names of passengers, the recorder as a matter of routine substituted
"Mc" for "Mac" in surnames of the Irish passengers.
The recorder often abbreviates the Occupation of passengers, e.g., "Lab" or
"Labr" for Laborer, "Spinst" for Spinster, "Inft" for Infant and "Gent" for
Gentleman.
334 Surname is recorded as "Cary", but might possibly be "Carry" or "Carey".
344 Surname is recorded as "Mungan", but might possibly be "Mungovan".
350 Surname is recorded as "Eagan", but might actually be "Egan".
354-362 Surname is recorded as "Gallaher", but might actually be "Gallagher".
370 Although it appears to be written as "Taffe", surname might possibly be
"Laffe" or "Laffey".
373-376 Surname is recorded as "Gayner", but might actually be spelled
"Gaynor".
388 Surname is recorded as "Wheelan", but might actually be spelled "Whelan".
415-417 Surname is recorded as "Branan", but might actually be "Brannan".
435 Surname is recorded as "Marr", but might possibly be "Meagher" or "Maher".
438 Surname is recorded as "Phellan", but might actually be "Phelan".
439 Surname is recorded as "Gormonly", but might actually be "Gormally"
or "Gormley".
441 Surname is recorded as "Reed", but might possibly be "Reid" or "Reade".
445 Surname is recorded as "Collin", but might actually be "Collins".
474 Surname is recorded as "Hadfield", but might possibly be "Hatfield".
475-476 It appears likely that the recorder made an error and reversed the Sex
and Occupations of these two passengers.
488 Surname is possibly "Kaly" or "McKaly".
501 Surname is possibly "Doworsgan", "Donorsgan", "Downegan" or even
"Donnegan".
503 Surname is recorded as "Gorrigan", but might possibly be "Corrigan".
506 Surname is recorded as "McAtear", but might possibly be "McAteer".
507 Given name is recorded as "La^u", perhaps an abbreviation for "Laurence".
554 Surname is either "Field" or "Fuld".
557 Letters of given name are poorly formed and difficult to decipher, but
name appears to be written as "Bog^l", but might possibly "Brgt" meant as
an abbreviation for Bridgit.
558 Surname appears to be written as "Kermody", but might possibly be
"Kermode" or even "Kennedy".
584 Surname is recorded as "Tuohey", but might actually be "Tuohy".
585 Surname is recorded as "Buckly", but might actually be "Buckley".
587 Surname is recorded as "Mahoney", but might actually be "Mahony".
619 Surname appears to be either "Willes" or "Welles", but might possibly
be "Wells", "Wills" or even "Willis".
630-633 Surname appears to be written as "Laureur", "Laurewr" or "Lauraor".
631-633 Passengers' Ages are not recorded.
647 Surname appears to be either "Bendell" or "Bandell".
650 Notation associated with this passenger states "Born on Passage". Given
name, age, sex, occupation and country of citizenship entries are not
recorded.
