SS Atlantic
Most passenger and crew names of the SS Atlantic, that sank off the coast of Nova Scotia on April 1, 1873, were taken from the New York Times, dated April 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th. The edition of April 2nd, 1873 did not have any passenger lists. There is an account though of people going to the office of the White Star line to find out the fate of friends or relatives. A few names are mentioned; these were added to the passenger list below. Names and their spelling vary in most editions of the newspaper, therefore a duplication of names might have occurred while transcribing the passengers. The scans were also not very clear at times. Some of the foreign names are also spelled phonetically.
This letter to the Editor of the New York Times appeared in the edition dated April 5th, 1873, followed by a list of lost passengers.
To the Editor of the New York Times:
The cable has brought me today a full list of steerage passengers per Atlantic, not yet accounted for, of which I send you a copy. This list will prove to be in excess of the actual loss, from the difficulty in separating, in the cable message, initials and christian names in the case of families, but all anxiety can be dismissed by those who have surmised that friends might be on board if their names be not found on the list, or in that of the saved, already published in your journal, as doubtless they did not embark on our ill-fated steamer. I am, dear sir, yours obediently, J.H. Sparks Saturday April 5, 1873
