Transcriber's Notes
* An asterisk is used to call attention to additional information in the
Notes on Passenger Entries (see below).
? A question mark is used to indicate illegible letters or words.
^ Indicates that superscript was used for the subsequent letter or letters.
This list is somewhat hard to read in places because it was apparently
written on both sides of the paper and the ink tended to bleed through from
the other side when it was microfilmed. It is especially hard to tell where
there is a ditto mark in the Occupation column, indicating that a passenger
has the same occupation as the one last written.
No deaths or births during the voyage are recorded on this passenger list.
5 - Last name is hard to read; it could be Gesbach or Gerbach.
31-32 - The age for these passengers is difficult to read; the ink stroke
is so broad that it looks like "11" but "17" seems more likely.
35 - The first letter of the town could be an "L", but the transcriber
could find neither a Sickmaul or a Lickmaul in Germany. See the
following notes on hometowns for further discussion.
39 - Again the ink strokes for the age are difficult to read; it could
also be "78".
65-68 - Transcriber believes that last name should be spelled "Glaab", though
name is clearly spelled "Klaub" on the list. There are 40 Glaab entries
in the telephone directory for the Schimborn/Mombris area; there are
no Klaub, Klaab, or Glaub entries.
71-75 - Last name has an umlaut over the "a".
83-85 - Correct spelling of last name should be "Stenger"; there are no
"Staenger" listings in the telephone directory for the Mombris,
Aschaffenburg, and Spessart areas, while there are nearly 300 "Stenger"
entries in those areas.
109 - There is an umlaut over the "u" in Buttner.
113 - Hamilton could be a town in the U.S., indicating that this passenger
was already a U. S. resident. He was probably returning from a trip
back to Germany. The transcriber wonders if it may refer to Hamilton
County, Ohio (where Cincinnati is located). See the following notes on
hometowns for further discussion.
124 - Surname should probably be "Herbert", since Herbet is not a common
German surname. There are over 25 Herbert telephone directory entries
(and none for "Herbet") in the Rottenberg/Aschaffenburg area. However,
there are no "Herbert" entries in Rottenberg itself, only in the
immediate vicinity.
127 - "W^we" following the name "Marg Detels"; this is an abbreviation
for "Witwe," meaning she is a widow.
130 - First name is hard to read because of bleed-through from the reverse
side of list.
146-48 - Last name should probably be spelled "Lorenz", though the list clearly
reads "Lorez".
151 - This entry seems strange: a 62 year old man with the noble "von" in his
German-sounding name, whose residence is shown as Pittsburg and whose
occupation is shown as "Peasant" (through ditto mark).
153 - There is an umlaut over the "u" in the surname.
157-60 - There is an umlaut over the "u" in Hubner and in Budingen; the age for
Elis Hubner is obscured by a hole in the paper (dark spot on microfilm);
it appears to end in "1"--"41" seems likely. Georg Hubner's age also
is not entirely clear.
166-76 - There is an umlaut over the "o" in Gotz.
179 - There is an umlaut over the "u" in Kluwe.
190 - Age clearly reads "11", but it is hard to believe that an eleven
year old was traveling with no obvious older companion.
192 - There is not an umlaut over the "o", though there probably should
be (see note above for 166-76).
193-94 - There appears to be an umlaut over the "o" in Frohlich.
Transcriber's Notes on Hometowns
As is often the case, many of the passengers on the Albert came from the same
areas of Germany. In this case, the largest group is from the area around
Aschaffenburg in northwestern Bavaria, especially a number of villages north
of Aschaffenburg in what is sometimes called the Kalhgrund; 25 passsengers
are from the Kahlgrund town of Schollkrippen (with an umlaut over the "o").
A smaller group comes from a nearby part of Hessen centered on the small town
of Niederstetten. The remainder are scattered among a number of other towns,
some of which are 100 miles or more from the Kahlgrund. Of course, the
transcriber has not been able to identify all of towns, and he may be
incorrect about some of his choices.
Here is an alphabetical listing of the hometowns shown on the Albert's
passenger list, with the transcriber's comments about their likely location:
Acholhausen = Acholshausen, a town in Bavaria about 15 miles north-northeast
of Niederstetten.
Adelshausen = Adolzhausen (about 2 miles west of Niederstetten) (but also see
Acholshausen in this list which sounds much the same).
Altenburg - Map Quest listed 10 towns named "Altenburg" and another 5 spelled
"Altenberg" in Germany.
Atte could not be located.
Bartbach could not be located.
Blankenbach is located about 1.5 miles south-southwest of Schollkrippen.
Boll is a town about 4 miles southwest of Goppingen (with an umlaut over the
"o") in Baden-Wurttemberg; it is about 75 miles south-southeast of
Aschaffenburg.
Borkin - There are at least 5 Borkens in Germany (no "Borkin").
Budingen is a town in Hessen, just north of the Bavarian border; it is about
13 miles north-northwest of Schollkrippen.
Ebersbach is a town about 4 miles south-southeast of Aschaffenburg.
Eckartsdorf = Eckardsroth, a town in Hessen just across the border from the
northwest corner of Bavaria, about 10 miles north of Schollkrippen.
Edelsbach = Edelbach, a town about 2.5 miles northeast of Schollkrippen.
Eichenberg is a town about 2 miles south of Schollkrippen.
Elsenfeld is a town on the Main River about 7 miles south of Aschaffenburg.
Gastdorf could not be located; the closest match that the transcriber could
find is a Niedersachsen town named "Gestorf," about 8 miles south of the city
of Hannover; that town is over 100 miles north of the
Aschaffenburg/Niederstetten area.
Geisselbach = Geiselbach, a town about 2.5 miles northwest of Schollkrippen.
Gr. Blankenbach = Gross Blankenbach, which refers to the portion of
Blankenbach that is on the northwest side of the Kahl River.
Gr. Lauterbach = Gross Laudenbach, a town about 2 miles northeast of
Schollkrippen.
Grosshenbach = Grosshemsbach, a small village about 8 miles west of
Schollkrippen (also see Kleinhemsbach); however, it could also be
Grossheubach (a town on the Main River about 10 miles south of
Aschaffenburg); the key third letter clearly appears to be an "n", so
phoenetically the name of the town should sound more like Grosshemsbach than
Grossheubach.
Hainbacherthal = Heimbuchenthal, a Bavarian town about 9 miles southeast of
Aschaffenburg.
Hamilton is probably a town or county in the United States; there are 25 or
more towns named Hamilton in the U.S.
Hein = Hain im Spessart, a town about 6 miles southeast of Schollkrippen.
Heiningen is a town about 2 miles northeast of Boll.
Heitungsfeld is probably Heidingsfeld, a town about 1 mile south of Wurzburg.
Herforth may be Herford, a Niedersachsen town about 25 miles east-southeast
of Osnabruck (with an umlaut over the "u"). Herford is more than 100 miles
north of the Aschaffenburg/Schollkrippen area.
Hollenbach is about 6 miles west of Niederstetten (Holmbach, the hometown
shown for 24, could actually be Hollenbach).
Holmbach could be Kolmbach (a town in Hessen about 10 miles southeast of
Darmstadt) or maybe it is misspelled and really is Hollenbach. Also, the
transcriber searched for Holmbach on Map Quest; that yielded one result that
was about 8 miles northeast of Heidelberg in a heavily wooded area but the
name "Holmbach" was not shown on the map, even at the greatest magnification;
maybe it is an abandoned village.
Homberg - There are at least 7 Hombergs in Germany; however, the transcriber
believes that this is really "Heimberg", a town 4 miles east-southeast of
Neiderstetten.
Keilberg is located about 4 miles east of Aschaffenburg.
Kl. Blankenbach = Klein Blankenbach, which refers to the portion of
Blankenbach that is on the southeast side of the Kahl River.
Kleinhenbach = Kleinhemsbach, a small village about 8 miles west of
Schollkrippen (also see Grosshemsbach); however, it could also be
Kleinheubach (a town on the Main River about 10 miles south of
Aschaffenburg). The key third letter really looks like an "n".
Krombach is a town about 2 miles west of Schollkrippen.
Lauterbach = Laudenbach (about 3 miles north of Niederstetten); however,
there are many other possibilities, since there are at least 10 Lautenbachs
and 6 Laudenbachs in Germany. Two other Laudenbachs are on the Main River,
one south and one southeast of Aschaffenburg, plus there is Grosslaudenbach
and Kleinlaudenbach near Schollkrippen.
Leiter could not be located.
Membris = Mombris (with an umlaut over the "o"), a town about 3.5 miles west
of Schollkrippen.
Michelbach is a town in Bavaria about 6 miles west of Schollkrippen.
Neudorf - There are at least 10 towns named "Neudorf" in Germany.
Niederstetten is located in Baden-Wurttemberg about 12 miles south of
Wurzburg in Lower Franconia (northwestern Bavaria) on the Main River; this is
about 50 miles southeast of Aschaffenburg.
Rothenburg = Rottenberg, a town about 2 miles south of Schollkrippen.
Rothengrund is a town about 5 miles southwest of Schollkrippen.
Rutsehenhausen could be Rutschenhausen (with an umlaut over the first "u"), a
town about 10 miles north of Wurzburg.
Schafferheim = Schaafheim, a town in Hessen about 7 miles southwest of
Aschaffenburg.
Schimborn is located about 4 miles southwest Of Schollkrippen.
Schneppenbach is a town that virtually adjoins Schollkrippen on the north
side of Schollkrippen.
Schochstadt - Map Quest listed no "Schochstadt"; the transcriber found two
towns named "Stockstadt am Main" and one is 3 miles west of Aschaffenburg (on
the west bank of the Main River) and seems the likely one.
Schrotsberg = Schrozberg (about 5 miles southeast of Niederstetten).
Seilauf = Sailauf, a town about 3.5 miles south of Schollkrippen.
Shillkrippen = Schollkrippen (with an umlaut over the "o"), a town in the
northwest corner of Bavaria about 8 miles north of Aschaffenburg.
Sickmaul = Seckmauren, a town in Hessen about 10 miles south of
Aschaffenburg; there are at least 10 Hillerichs listed in the telephone
directory in the vicinity of Seckmauern, so that makes this choice seem
likely. In any event, "Seckmauren" is the only town that the transcriber
could find in Germany with anything close to the spelling on the passenger
list. Seckmauren is fairly close to the area around Aschaffenburg.
Soden is located about 4 miles southeast of Aschaffenburg; however, there is
also a "Bad Soden" located about 10 miles north of Schollkrippen and within a
mile or so of Eckardsroth.
Somborn is a town in Hessen, just across the border with Bavaria; it is about
6 miles northwest of Schollkrippen.
Sommerkahl is located about a mile south of Schollkrippen.
Sonderkarn probably is the same as Sommerkahl (there is no Sonderkarn in
Germany).
Spielberg is the name of at least 9 towns in Germany.
Sulzbach = Sulzbach am Main, a town in Bavaria on the Main River, about 4
miles south of Aschaffenburg. However, there are at least 10 other towns
named Sulzbach in Germany.
Wenighossbach = Wenighosbach (with an umlaut over the "o"), a town about 4
miles southwest of Schollkrippen.
Wermuthshausen = Wermutshausen (about 2 miles northeast of Niederstetten).
Additional comments from readers of this list are welcome; contact the
transcriber at the email address below.
Correspondence 3/12/2005 passenger #197 Herz
Christoph Herz was born 23 Jan 1803 in Kleinheubach, Germany, Postal-Code
D-63924. He was a Lutheran.. (researcher wishes to remain anonymous)
Correspondence 3/12/2005 passengers #79-85 Schoffler/Schaefer, Stenger, Reising
J. A. Schoffler (passenger #82) as shown on the passenger list almost certainly
is Adam Schaefer, who settled in Valley City, Ohio. where he married Catherine
Stenger (passenger #85) as 1841. His first initial "J", as shown on the passenger
list may have stood for "Julius," which was his father's name. Family records
indicate Catherine's parents as Adam Stengel/Stenger? & Eva Rosenberg(er?). I
believe Margaretha Reising (passenger #80) also to be a Stenger, another daughter
of Adam & Eva (passengers #83 and #84) and therefore a sister to Catherine. I have
not found records to prove this, but other researchers have stated Margaretha's
father was Adam Stenger. Michael and Margaretha Reising, Adam & Catherine Scheafer,
and Eva Stenger are all buried at St Martin's Catholic cemetery in Valley City, Ohio.
To this date, I have found no record of Adam Stenger's death, but it was probably
before 1850. Eva was living in Cleveland, Ohio with the Scheafer family according
to the census. Also, computing ages as given in the Ship Albert log, they match up
with actual birth dates that I have.. Adam Scheafer was born Sept 6, 1809, in
Aschaffenburg (of course, that may refer to the former state of Achaffenburg,
which included Sommerkahl, rather than the city of Aschaffenburg). His parents
were listed as Julius Schaeffer & Catherine Stengel/Stenger? Adam & Catherine
Scheafer's eldest child was christened Michael in 1843, Cleveland Ohio. Michael
died as an infant, in 1843. Schaefer (my spelling) has been written so many
different ways it is hard to keep track of. Even Adam's children used at least
3 different spellings. Officially, Adam used SCHEAFER. My grand mother changed
it to SCHAEFER in an effort to correct what she considered a mis-spelling.
Jeff Schaefer Akron, Ohio
Correspondence added 27 Maryc 2007, passengers #65-68, KLAUB
My family name is Klaub. As there are few Kaubs in the US and most seem to
have settled in Chicago in the late 19th century, I am sure that the names
listed on the Albert are related to me. My father's name was Peter, as was
his father who came over from either Germany or Czechoslovakia (circa 1880).
Regards, David Fredericks (formerly Klaub)
