Lister used these numbers, but at times only partially filled a page. Transcriber numbered consecutively. A ? indicates letter or letters which could not be read because of the quality of the document. The parentheses are used to add comments of transcriber and to clarify where necessary--they were not that of the lister himself. Passengers 1-112 sailed from Liverpool 7/21/1906; these are first-class passengers. Passengers 113-149 sailed from Queenstown, Ire. 7/22/1906, also First Class Passengers. Passengers 150-353 sailed from Liverpool 7/21/1906 and were probably Second Class Passengers, as were Passengers 354-399 from Queenstown. Passengers 400-970 were Steerage passengers. Passenger #598, Julius Ogren is my paternal grandfather. In his diary he describes the voyage and I thought I would share it: "July 21 - Got on board the grey Ocean Steamship, SS Lukania which had been inspected and left port at 5:00. July 22 - On the Ocean. Took passengers from Ireland, about 60 in number. Quiet sea, but sea is dark. July 23 - Wind blew; however, otherwise beautiful. July 24 - Rain in the morning. Westerly storm. Middle of the afternoon, quieter, clear weather. July 25 - Rather cloudy, not some hard storms. July 26 - Rainy weather, no fog. July 27 - Rain and fog. Middle afternoon clear, rather beautiful weather. Came in NY's harbor in the evening. Anchored at 9:00. We got to behold a big and beautiful fireworks display. July 28 - 9:00 in the morning, we stepped onto land and began to go through the examination of our papers. The same were inspected and we got the tickets cleared, a long, boring wait closed in a waiting room; went off on the Baltimore Railroad at 12:20 after midnight." It is worthy to note that Passenger 869 is the famed Nobel prize-winning author, Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951).
