Transcriber's Notes:
A question mark indicates material that was indecipherable.
An asterisk indicates further information found in the passenger notes.
A caret (^) indicates that the letters following it were written in superscript.
The writer of this list uses ditto marks to indicate last names (family groups) or
just the given name and the designations, wife, son, mother, brother, daughter or
just "d" or "daugh." Then he usually gives no futher information in the following
columns except for age and gender.
His abbreviations vary depending on the space available in a column!
Some possible explanations for name abbreviations used in this list:
Adelh. = Adelheid
Bernh. or Berh. = Bernhard
Bernh^d or Bernh. = Bernhardine (female name)
Cathar. Cth. or Cath. = Catharine
Ch. or Christ. = Christine (female)
Elisab. = Elisabeth
Fried. or Friedr = Friedrich (Fried. could be Friedemann)
Gerh. = Gerhard
Gertr. = Gertrud or Gertrude
Ges. = Gesine (female name)
Joh. = Johann
Jos. = Joseph
Heinr. = Heinrich
Herm. = Hermann
Mar. = Margaretha, Margareta, etc.
Mart. = Martin
Ph. = possibly Phillip
Sam. = Samuel
Wilh. = Wilhelm
W^ne = Wilhelmine
1 Surname has an umlaut over the "u" so may be von Bueren.
6 Surname has an umlaut over the "a" so may be Schaeper.
14-15 Though there is no "son" indication for this entry, there is also no further
information except for age and ditto marks for gender and occupation. I
believe the name should be Paul Emmel Jacobs, which would make no. 15, his
wife, Gesine Adelgunde Jacobs, and no. 16, his son, Johann Wilhelm Jacobs.
16 Note in far right had column indicates: "died on the 20th of October."
21-26 Surname has an umlaut over the "o" so may be Schroeder.
28-29 Surname has an umlaut over the "u" so may be Dueweling.
30 Surname has an umlaut over the "u" so may be Rueter. Also, note in right
hand columns says: baby dead born on the 20th Oct.
34 Surname has an umlaut over the "o" so may be Groene.
35 Surname has an umlaut over the "o" so may be Goewers.
44 Surname has an umlaut over the "o" so may be Noegel.
53 Note in far right had column indicates: "died on the 20th of October."
65-66 Surname has an umlaut over the "u" so may be Mueller. Also, note in right
hand columns for no. 65 says: husband in Baltimore.
71-74 Surname has an umlaut over the "o" so may be Boerder.
78 Surname has an umlaut over the "o" so may be Broecker.
88-92 Surname is probably Von Witzikon.
105 Note in far right had column indicates: "died on the 2nd of October."
106 Note in far right had column indicates: "died on the 9th of October."
120-121 Only given names are listed here with the designations of father, mother,
after them. Presumably it could be Heinrich and Elisabeth Schmidt, but in
the previous entries the scribe said "his mother" so this could be the
parents of Elisabeth (Mrs. Wilh. Schmidt)in which case there would probably
be a different surname.
128 Given name seems to have an umlaut over the "u" so it would be Düne.
133 Surname has an umlaut over the "o" so may be Koehne.
138 No further information listed for this passenger.
141 Surname may be Stunken or Stienken.
144 Surname has an umlaut over the "o" so may be Groene.
167-170 Surname has an umlaut over the "u" so may be Schlueter. Also, both entries
for 167 and 158 have a large X entered between the age and the gender. No
explanation given for those.
173 Note in far right had column indicates: "died on the 17th of October."
175 Surname has an umlaut over the "a" so may be Jaeckering.
200 Surname has an umlaut over the "o" so may be Bloemer.
216-217 Surname has an umlaut over the "u" so may be Scholuecken.
224 Surname has an umlaut over the "u" so may be Scholuecken.
226-231 Surname has an umlaut over the "u" so may be Brueggemann.
232 Surname has an umlaut over the "u" so may be Luecken.
235 Presumably this passenger is the wife of no. 234, though there is no
indication of that (as in other entries) and there is no surname here.
244 Last residence "Dutchland" may indicate Deutschland (Germany) or perhaps
Holland since the writer uses English terms in other entries like Prussia
and Bavaria rather than the German terms of Preussen or Bayern.
245 Entry has a large X entered between the age and the gender. No explanation
given for that.
289-290 Surname has an umlaut over the "u" so may be Muehlenkamp.
292 Note in far right had column indicates: "died on the 4th of October."
293 Surname has an umlaut over the "o" so may be Goevert.
296 Surname has an umlaut over the "o" so may be Hoegemann.
Correspondence 12/06/02 passengers #9-20 Jacobs/Emmel
About passengers number 9 through 20, the Jacobs family, Paul Emmel,
passenger number 14, is my great uncle, brother of Ludwig Emmel, my
great grandfather. I can only guess that he was listed with the Jacobs
surname to lower the cost of the trip or to ease the way through German
or American peper work somehow. It could also have been a simple error,
and Occam's Razor would indicate that to be the most likely answer. To
add to the confusion, Paul's father's given name was Jacob. This is,
without question, my Paul Emmel.
Paul was born Feb 4, 1840, probably in Koblenz, the same as Ludwig.
Gesina, number 15, is indeed his wife. She was born December 10, 1841 in
"Wurtemburg" according to the 1870 census. In the 1880 census, Gesina's
mother Margarett was living with them in Pittsburgh and her birthplace
is listed as Hanover. Your record of a child who didn't survive answers
the mystery of the 1900 census in which the number of children was
written as 1 and then overwritten with a 0. They had no other children.
Paul and Ludwig's families shared an address in Pittsburgh for many
years, or lived within a couple of blocks of each other, until Paul and
Gesina moved to nearby Etna, Pa., where Paul worked as a gardener. Paul
died in 1919 and Gesina in 1921. At the time, she was living with a
niece, Gesina Fischer, near Etna.
I had no record of the rest of the Jacobs family so your work is a
windfall of information.
My cup runneth over! Dale Emmel, Tucson, AZ
