Ship Scotia
I, Jos.* Mis* Kelly do solemnly, sincerely and truly swear, that the within list, subscribed with my name, contains to the best of my knowledge and belief, a just and true account or report of all passengers, who have been taken on board the Ship Scotia at Liverpool or at any other foreign port, or at sea, and brought in said Ship into any district of the United States, since the departure from said port of Liverpool. (signed) J Ms Kelly. Sworn the 5 May 1849 BEFORE John C?an??ge? (no title).
Columns represent: (1) Ports of Embarkation. This column has been omitted because there were no entries in this column and the captain's oath states that all passengers boarded at Liverpool. (2) Names of Passengers. (3-8) Age in whole years and Sex. The manifest has six columns labeled: M Adults, F Adults, Total Adults, M Children under 14 Years, F Children under 14 Years, Total Children under 14 Years. But for each passenger there is only one entry (the age) in one of the six columns, and there are no entries in the Total columns. Therefore, the transcriber has consolidated the six columns into two: Age and Sex. (9) Profession, Occupation or Calling of Passengers. No information was in this column, so it has been omitted. (10) Port to which Passengers have contracted to be ????ed (word illegible). No information was in this column, so it has been omitted.

CABIN PASSENGERS
We hereby certify the above is a correct List of all the Passengers who embarked at
the Port of Liverpool.
Signed J M?s Kelly Master.
Countersigned (signature cannot be read) Officer of Customs.
Transcriber's Notes:
* Passenger names on the original document were not numbered; the numbers were
added by the transcriber. Ditto marks were used consistently by the recorder
for passengers with the same surname. In every instance in this list where
the same surname appears two or more times in sequence, the second and
subsequent surnames were ditto marks on the manifest. Example: passengers
#1-6, in the Flanery family, only passenger #1 was listed with a surname = Honora
Flanery; passengers #2,3,4,5,6 = Jno ditto, Ann ditto, Jno ditto, Mick ditto,
Pall ditto. The ditto consisted of two squiggly marks at the right end of a
horizontal line which extended the length of the name or ditto mark above it.
* An asterisk * indicates the original recorder may have made an error or that the
transcriber added a clarification or interpretation.
* A question mark ? indicates that a word or letters could not be read due to the
recorder's handwriting or quality of the original document.
* An apostrophe ' in an abbreviated given name means the letter immediately after
the mark was raised in superscript. Examples: in #171 Sam'l. the 'l' was raised,
in #186 Marg't. the 't' was raised.
* Any other punctuation marks shown in passengers' names (period. carat^) appeared
on the original document.
* Abbreviations are shown here exactly as recorded on the document. Given names
abbreviated on this list may mean:
Ale'x = Alexander
Anthy = Anthony
Cath = Catherine
Chas = Charles
Chris't = Christian or Christopher
Eliz = Elizabeth
Fras = Francis
Geo = George
Jas = James
Jno = John or Jonathan
Jos = Joseph
Marg't = Margaret
Mich'l or Mick = Michael
Pat or Patk = Patrick
Rob or Robt = Robert
Saml = Samuel
Thos = Thomas
Wm = William.
The recorder was not consistent in using a period at the end of abbreviated
given names (#76 Mich'l versus #148 Mich'l.) and the transcriber uses a period
only where one appears on the original document.
* Regarding children and infants, note in the Recapitulation which appears at the
end of the list, there are 201 "souls" on this ship, but only 168 statute adults.
A child under age 14 equals 1/2 adult, and an infant (under age 1) equals '0'
adult. Also, all 5 infants on the list have a female name (4 Mary and 1 Bridget),
but the Recapitulation states that there are 3 Male Infants and 2 Female Infants.
Thus, either three of the infant names on the list are wrong or there is an error
in the Recapitulation. The 5 infants on the manifest were recorded as 'Inf' (not
in a column, but squarely on the vertical line that separates the Total Children
column from the Profession column), without mention of sex or age, but infants
are presumed to be under age 1, because age 1 was specified for three children
listed in "under 14" columns (passengers #57, 143, 169).
* Captain Kelly's name was written 5 times on the manifest, each time with a
different abbreviation for his given (and ?middle) name. The 5 variations of his
name look like: 1) Jo's. Mis Kelly (written by someone other than the captain).
2) J Ms Kelly (captain's signature). 3) ?? Mi?? Kelly (might be written by
recorder). 4) J^Mis Kelly (captain's signature; the ^ mark appears in the
signature). 5) J Mis Kelly (captain's signature).
Passenger Notes:
#1 Honora Flanery's age could be 41 or 40.
#6 given name Pall is spelled as written. This might be phonetic for Paul. Given
name of passenger 13 is spelled the same.
#7-9 surname looks most like McCamley but could be McCamby. Definitely not Caw,
so not McCawley.
#8 Chas McCamley's age looks like 26, could be 20.
#9 Mary McCamley. See note above regarding all infants: age is less than 12 months
and no sex is specified regardless of name. Also, all 5 infants in the manifest
have female names but the Recapitulation at end of the manifest states there are
3 male infants and 2 female infants.
#10 Garrett surname could be Ganett because this double 'rr' looks somewhat like
'n' but double 'rr' is more likely.
#13 Pall given name spelled as written. This might be phonetic for Paul. Given name
of passenger 6 is spelled the same.
#16 Ann Mary is written as full name and it is presumed that Mary is the surname
since there is no ditto mark indicating she is related to passenger #15. Age
looks most like 24 but could be 20.
#22 surname Hilley 2nd letter looks most like 'i' but is not dotted. If 'e' the
name would be Helley.
#23-26 ONeil surname has upper case N, no apostrophe.
#27-28 same names, but passenger #28 surname is ditto mark.
#29 Age looks most like 36 but could be 30.
#31 Age looks like 10 or 16, but is entered in adult column (over age 13) so 16
most likely.
#39 surname Slane looks most like it ends 'ne' but might end 'm' so surname would
be Slam, but Slane more likely.
#40 given name is partially blurred but looks like Mary.
#41 Age looks most like 53 but could be 63.
#44-45 surname Naughton looks most like it ends 'on' but top of 'o' is open and
blends into the 'n' so last two letters could be 'en' or 'in' so spelling
could be Naughten, Naughtin.
#51 Bridget Kelly. See note above regarding all infants: age is less than 12 months
and no sex is specified regardless of name. Also, all 5 infants in the manifest
have female names but the Recapitulation at end of the manifest states there
are 3 male infants and 2 female infants.
#52-53 same names, but passenger 53 surname is ditto mark.
#55-57 surname Fanch. The 'ch' at end of surname seems clear, but could be 'ek'
so name would be Fanek. Surname of passenger 126 is the same.
#63 In given name Betty the double 'tt' not crossed so name looks like Belly which
is not likely today; unknown whether Belly was a nickname used in 1849.
#67-74 Surname Jilly is unusual but the first letter is like 'J' with upstroke loop
curving clockwise that the recorder uses in names Jane Jas Jno Jos Judy. Second
letter looks like 'i' but is not dotted so could be 'e' and name would be Jelly.
#75 surname clearly starts with 'Can' but this spelling is unusual. Name could be
Connaughton if the recorder used a phonetic spelling.
#77 Marg't Daniel's age is smudged and illegible, but is in adult column so she is
female 14 or older.
#78 Age looks most like 14 but second number is smudged, might be 17 or 19.
#78-79 Wm Daniel and Wm Jno Daniel. Although surname for both is indicted by ditto
marks, these two passengers have same given name so recorder may have added the
middle name Jno for 79 to differentiate him from passenger 78.
#81 Age looks most like 40 but could be 41.
#84 Mary McCormick. See note above regarding all infants: age is less than 12 months
and no sex is specified regardless of name. Also, all 5 infants in the manifest
have female names but the Recapitulation at end of the manifest states there are
3 male infants and 2 female infants.
#90 given name Lilley. The 1st letter looks most like upper case 'L' appearing in
other names on this list and 2nd letter looks most like 'i' but is not dotted.
Unusual spelling of this name but does not look like anything else.
#96 given name looks most like Winney although 'i' is not dotted. No alternative
names appear possible. 1st letter is identical to 'W' used by recorder in name
Wm, not 'M' used by recorder in other names, so not Minney.
#100 Age looks most like 22 but could be 28.
#102 Surname Ho???. Looks like Hoom but ending might be 'rn' instead of 'm' or 'vin'
instead of 'om' thus name could be Hoorn or Hovin. A spot over the name might
be dot of an 'i'.
#103 Mary McFa?l. Age looks like 18 but could be 19. There is a crack or blot over
given name but looks most like Mary. In surname there is a blur between 'a' and
'l' but it appears to be 'r' 'ro' or 'w' therefore most likely name is McFarl,
McFarol, McFawl. As with some other names on the manifest, the recorder may have
written the name phonetically.
#106 Surname Slater. The 1st letter looks like 'S' but not like the upper case S
written by the recorder in other names; in fact it is unlike any other letter
written by the recorder. This S looks like a printed italicized S that flows
in one curved motion starting on the line on the left with a small 'c' hook that
then curves up at a 90 degree angle to form a 'hat' over the 'l'.
#108 Age looks like 54, could be 34.
#109 Age looks most like 71, could be 70.
#111-120 The section of the document listing these passengers is in very bad
condition. The document is so dark and stained that some names and ages blend
into the dark background.
#111 Age looks like 13 but could be 10. Is entered in column for male under 14 years.
#112 Age looks like 9 but could be 7. Is entered in column for female under 14 years.
#113-115 Surname difficult to read because of poor quality of document. Surname
written for passenger 113, but 114-115 have ditto marks.
#113 Jno Dug?? Same sex, age and surname as passenger 114. Twins? Surname is
difficult because of poor quality of document. 4th letter is 'a' or 'u,' 5th
letter looks most like 'n'. Surname is possibly Dugan or Dugun.
#114 ???'? Dug?? Surname is ditto mark. 14 year old male. Same sex, age and surname
as passenger 113. Twins? Given name is difficult because of poor quality of
document, but it is abbreviation because last letter is raised superscript;
1st letter could be 'A' with a long tail or 'P' followed closely by 'a,' next
letter is either 'l' or uncrossed 't' and last letter is raised superscript.
Patc'k? or Ale'x?
#115 ?a??? Dug?? Surname is ditto mark. Given name is 5 letters, passenger is female.
1st letter 'J' or 'S', 2nd letter looks like 'a', 3rd letter looks like 'r' or
'n', 4th letter looks like 'a' or 'e', 5th letter looks like 'h' or 't.' Janet
or Sarah? Quality of document makes age difficult but might be 40.
#116 Mich'l C?nn???ham Surname contains at least 10 letters but is difficult because
of poor quality of document. 2nd letter 'a' 'o' or 'u.' Next two letters dark
and blurred, but no loops above or below line, could be double 'nn'. Next two
letters blurred but no loops above or below line. Next letter loops below line
like 'g.' Surname Cunningham fits, but other combinations are possible.
#117-120 Surname difficult to read because of poor quality of document. Surname
written for passenger 117, but 118-120 have ditto marks.
#117 Mich'l M????ck. Surname difficult due to poor quality of document. 2nd letter
a vowel 'a' 'o' or 'u' 3rd letter looks like 'n' or 'r' 4th letter loops above
line like 'd' 'l' or 't', 5th letter a vowel 'a' 'o' or 'u'. Surname could be
Murdock but other combinations are possible.
#118 Jno M????ck Surname is ditto mark. See note above for passenger 117; surname
could be Murdock.
#119 Mary M????ck Given name is difficult because of poor quality of document but
looks most like Mary and age is entered in 'F' column so Mary makes sense.
Surname is ditto mark. See note above for passenger 117; could be Murdock.
Age ?7 in adult column is either 17 or 27.
#120 ??? M????ck The only readable entry for this passenger is the ditto mark for
the surname. See note above for passenger 117; could be Murdock. Given name is 3
or 4 letters, but is illegible. Quality of the document obliterates the columns
for determining sex and age.
#121 Surname looks most like Baron but 'ro' could be 'w' and name would be Bawn.
Ends in 'n' so not Baum.
#126 Surname looks most like Fanch but 'ch' could be 'ek' and name would be Fanek.
Same surname as passengers 55-57.
#132 given name Peter, but 't' is not crossed.
#133 Age looks most like 51 but could be 57.
#150-155 Surname McCale. Last consonant looks most like 'l' followed by ink smudge
but could be 'b' with a very small loop after the downstroke and name would be
McCabe. However, does not look like lower case 'b' used by recorder in other
names because stroke for final 'e' starts too low, so McCale most likely.
Surname written for passenger #150, but passengers #151-155 have ditto marks.
#155 Mary McCale or McCabe. See note above regarding all infants: age is less than
12 months and no sex is specified regardless of name. Also, all 5 infants in
the manifest have female names but the Recapitulation at end of the manifest
states there are 3 male infants and 2 female infants.
#157 Bridget D?yl? Surname difficult because of smudge on document. Area in front of
'y' could contain 'a' or 'o' or could be a long leading curve of the 'y.' The
last letter is probably 'e.' Name could be Dayle, Doyle, Dyle.
#160 Cath Hene??y The two questionable letters look exactly like double 'ff' in
surnames Duffy and Gaffey in this list, causing this name to look like 'Heneffy'
but this name is not in any surname data base the transcriber can find. The only
name that makes sense is Henessy, but the recorder did not write letter 's' like
'f' in any other names and no other names on this manifest contain double 'ss.'
In some old style writing a double 'ss' looks like 'fs' but not 'ff.' Maybe the
recorder just writes 'ss' in this unusual way.
#162 OBrien surname has upper case 'B' but no apostrophe. Age looks like 19, could be
18.
#165 Age looks like 20, could be 24.
#175 ?inney 1st letter of given name could be either M or W, thus Minney or Winney.
The first part of the letter has a loop like recorder uses in 'M' but the end of
the letter looks like 'W' used by recorder.
#179 Age looks like 5, could be 6.
#180 Surname McD?nato The letter following 'D' could be either 'e' or 'o' thus
McDenato or McDonato.
#181 Surname looks most like Calm, but ending could be 'on' instead of 'm' and name
would be Calon.
#189 Age looks like 16, could be 15.
#195 Age looks like 3, could be 5.
#199 Mary Cullen See note above regarding all infants: age is less than 12 months and
no sex is specified regardless of name. Also, all 5 infants in the manifest have
female names but the Recapitulation at end of the manifest states there are 3
male infants and 2 female infants.
#200 Surname McQuirk. Last two letters look most like 'rk' but could be 'ck' and name
would be McQuick.
