Transcriber's Notes:
* The use of an * indicates an ommission or error made by the original
recorder.
? The use of a ? indicates a word or letters that could not be read due
to the quality of the original document.
* Port of Departure and Port at which passengers have contracts to be
landed are eliminated because the Departure Port was Galway and the
Port of Arrival was Baltimore.
Passenger Notes:
# 11 - Sibby is probably the nickname for Sibohan
# 18 - Original name entered was-Michael Connolly 20 M Laborer-which was
crossed out and replaced by a Female Spinster. Age was not changed?
# 37-#38-#39-#40 - These four are obviously a family even though the last
name is spelled both Fahey and Fahy. Also, Barthy is probably the
nickname for Bartholemew
# 41 - For some reason Martin Fahey and Laborer were crossed out but
nothing was entered to replace them so I assume the crossing out
was a mistake and will go with the original entries
# 48 - Barthy - Bartholemew
# 50 - Honner - Honora
# 92 - Last name appears to be Killkelly but there is a crease in the
document and I suspect the name is really Kelly like passenger #91
#103 to #107 - These last five passengers are probably in intermediate
passenger space because their numbering was one to five. Illedgible
occupation for #103 and none given for the other four.
Correspondence 11/22/02 passengers #37-41 Fahey & #10 Burke
I came across this while doing research on the Fahey family. Listed are
a Martin Fahey #41 and a Bridget Burke #10, which are the names of my
gr grandparents, and the the ages listed of 17 and 18 respectively fits
in with the ages of my Martin and Bridget. In local records my Martin
spelled his name as both Fahey and Fahey. You list the five Faheys as
probably being a family, but Barthy and Bridget are 32 and have 2 children
5 and 3, Martin is 17, which would put his parents at the age of 15,
extremely rare in Ireland of the time where later marriages were more common.
I wonder if Martin was a cousin or something. I am also curious as to why
his name was crossed off. Anyway this was real exciting to me. Martin and
Bridget settled in Cleveland, Ohio and had several children, among them
were William, Lawrence, Beezer (female, how she got that name, and it was
not a nickname, I don't know), Evelyn Mortis, Fr. Thomas who was pastor
at St. John's cathedral in Cleveland for a few years and Michael (my grandfather).
Michael married Olive Grant and had 4 children Irene McChesney, Grant
(my father), Betty (Sr. Ursula) and Thomas. All deceased. Thanks for the info,
it gives me something more to go on in my family history inquiry. Tom Fahey
[note: when an ISTG member writes "could be family" that means extended family,
or "travelling together". This Martin could very well have been a cousin, brother,
nephew, etc., the note was just to let researchers know that he was apparently
part of this family group, travelling together and there was no error in the
reading of his age (note that he is 17 and put at the bottom of the family group
list. This is uncommon if he was a child of the couple, usually they are put
in age descending order). Sometimes the original manifest has a bracket or some
sort of clue that all listed are part of a family and ISTG members usually note
that for researchers. In general, when a name is crossed off of a manifest
it means the passenger did not board but had a ticket (on the list of potential
passengers given to the captain) or disembarked before the ship sailed. ISTG staff]
Additional Fahy correspondence 01/05/03
The plot thickens. Seventeen days after the brig Napoleon pulled into Baltimore,
the Cushla Macree also from Galway enterred New York harbor with a Martin Fahy
age 17 and a Brigit Burke (age unknown). I have seen the name Brigit Burke several
times and Martin Fahy a few also. Will the real Brigit and Martin please stand up.
Interesting! Tom Fahey
