Transcriber's Notes:
The quality of the original manifest is poor and in some cases, impossible to read or
make out the letters in the names of persons, ages, occupations and locations. I have
tried to make notes but for a large number of ? marks used, the reason would be that of
the poor quality of the original document.
The use of an * indicates an omission or error made by the original recorder.
The use of a ? indicates a word of letters that could not be read, due to quality of
original document.
For spacing reasons, when the passengers were noted as Steerage Forward or Steerage Aft,
I have omitted the word Steerage and entered only Forward or Aft.
Passenger Notes:
# 3 The 3rd letter of the surname looks like a c, then e or an a, and then possibly
a y for the last letter. It looks like a tail that goes below the line on the
last letter. Possible surnames, Macey, Macay.
# 4 The occupation for this passenger is not real legible, however, it looks like
plumb???
# 5 The occupation is as written
# 10 First name letters are C then possibly an a, r and l for Carl. Poor quality of
manifest.
# 18 There could be more than 4 letters in the surname but because the writing is so
faint, it is not possible to make out any other letters. The occupation is
unreadable due to the same reason, cannot make out any letters.
# 33 The last letters of the first name look like they could be ce for Constance.
Last name not readable.
# 40 William's surname could be Stone, Stony, or Stong
# 45 The 3 middle letters are all small - could be 'ire', 'ere', 'eri', or 'iri'
# 46 There are 5 to 7 letters, all small - the first could be 'u'
# 53 The surname could be Parkes or Parker
# 56 & 57 The occupation is two words - the first about 5 letters, begins with 'F', 'T'
or 'L'. The second is about 5 letters and begins with 'M', the rest are small.
# 57 The last letter could be an N for Griffin or Griffen.
# 64-69 Could be Cross
# 75 There is no given name and infant is written in the surname column, looks like
the infant of passenger # 74.
# 78 The occupation is 4 or 5 letters long and ends with 'ger'
# 89 There may be 1 or 2 small letters at the end. The first could be 'r' or 'n'
# 98 to 99 The letter I have ? looks like it could be an L or T. There is a faint line
that could be where a t would be crossed. Names could be Zelnicker or Zetnicker
#106 The last name of passenger could also be Larski
#144 The missing letter has a tail below the line - could be 'j', 'y', 'p', 'g',
double 's'
#151 The missing letters could be 'zz' or 'gg'
#183 First name could also be Thos
#214 Could be 'g' or 'z' Ryz or Ryg
#219 Could be 'co', 'ca', 'eo' or 'ea'
#231 The first letter could be 'N' or "k" - there may or may not be a letter after
the 'o'
#232 to 233 The missing letters are all small - could be 'e', 'i', 'r', or 'n'
#247 Surname could also be Pradt
#248 The name is short, maybe 3 to 5 letters total
#249 First name could be Vosseb and last name Romer, Remer
Correspondence added December 12, 2005, passenger 141, COLE
I think I may have found an ancestor in a ship on the ISTG website.
William Cole, a cigar maker, arrived in New York from London on 11 July
1883. But I cannot be sure it is 'my' William.
FOR: My great great grandfather William Peter Cole was born in London in
1839. I have traced him forward as far as the 1881 census of England and
Wales. Then he seems to disappear. But I have a copy of a letter written
to him by his son Thomas on 27 August 1883 that refers to him (Thomas)
being "over here" (the implication being that William is "over there",
ie in America - there are several oblique references to America and New
York in the letter). 'My' William was a cigar maker, as is the William
Cole in your transcription.
William's other son, William Robert Cole, was also a cigar maker and an
active trade unionist - in 1932 he was President of the National Cigar
and Tobacco Workers Union. The ship that brought the elder William Cole
to New York also carried a number of other cigar makers, so I wonder
whether William senior was also some sort of workers' representative and
whether there was some sort of international convention of cigar makers
that year.
AGAINST: According to the passenger list, the William Cole who arrived
in New York was 35 years old, ie born around 1848, nine years after 'my'
William was born.
I wondered whether there could have been an error in the transcription,
but I have just looked at a microfilm of the original document at my
local LDS Family History Centre here in the UK, and the age is
unequivocally 35. But of course it may have been entered incorrectly on
the original document.
With kind regards,
Peter Charlish
