Personal Notes
The Brig Josephine sailed from Bremen, Germany on 12 September 1846 and arrived at the port of New York on 21 September 1846. On board was my great great grandfather Wilhelm Schaaf, passenger #65. He came from Marburg, Germany, and he settled in Richmond, Virginia. He changed his name to William when he came to America. A brother, Bertram Schaaf and his sons Christian and Matthew Schaaf also came to Richmond, Virginia from Marburg, Germany at a later date in 1855. For more information contact
Carla Anne Schaaf Below is the translated letter his father wrote to Wilhelm before he sailed to America. Short Rules of Life for My Son William When He Sails for America Love God above all things and your neighbor as yourself; this is the first and greatest commandment. Pray to God in the morning and in the evening, and ask Him for what you need, and Lo! you shall receive it. In all misfortune and suffering that may come over you, trust in Providence, who will rule everything for your best, even if you should not understand it at once. When you are prosperous thank Heaven for it, and believe that you owe your happiness not to yourself alone. Always have God before your eyes; He sees everything. Do nothing that would make you blush if your parents would see it. Fear God alone! You need not tremble before men. They are made of earth like yourself, have flesh and bones like yourself. We are all children of one Father. But although you need not be afraid of men, still 'You must not insult them, you must always meet them with love and reverence, even when they hate and persecute you. Thus you will win the love of men. Be diligent and industrious in your vocation; for whosoever does not work, shall not eat either; without diligence and work you will attain nothing - with economy and diligence you will gather wealth so as to be able to look forward to a quiet old age. Keep a diary and write something good daily in it, even if it were only one line. Honor your benefactors and respect them as you do father and mother, and they will be father and mother to you. Flee all bad companies and avoid all unchaste words and conversations. Take good care of your health, but not with unmanly tenderness. Unmanliness and effeminacy are the grave of health and the cause of many diseases. Be temperate in all things; never get drunk, for thus man sinks below the beast. Never forget your parents, nor your brothers and sisters. Never take away anything, if it were only a pin. Great thieves always begin with small thefts. Read once a week these precepts and act accordingly; then God's benediction will be with you everywhere; and your father's and your mother's blessing will build you houses, as Holy Scripture says. Whatever you learn and do, you must always do it as perfectly as possible; whosoever now days does not distinguish himself in his vocation cannot expect any acknowledgment. These are perhaps my last words to you. Remember your loving father and mother. Marburg, Germany July, 1846
