The question mark indicates illegible letters or words on the original document. ^ Indicates endings written in superscript. * The column entitled "The country they mean to reside in" has been omitted. "United States" was entered in the first row and was dittoed in all other rows for the cabin passengers. For steerage passengers "United States" was entered in the first line and a wavy line ran the entire remainder of the list. * It looks like a straight edge might have been used to keep the rows parallel and caused the bottoms of some of the letters were on the straight edge and not on the list. * Sometimes the country name was enclosed in parenthesis or as follows |:Germany:|. Many times there was no closing mark. * The baggage column has brackets that connect groups having one set of luggage. These passengers will be noted. 1-6 - were connected together with a { in the baggage column 5 - month was spelled out 6 - year was spelled out 9 - The title is written in a very small script and the ending cannot be definitely deciphered, but looks like Misstris 15 - The first letter is either a B or an R 18 - Title same as #9 18 & 19 - were connected together with a { in the baggage column 19 - Chambremaid was transcribed as written 21-23 - were connected together with a { in the baggage column 23 - Surname could be Thomas, Title same as #9 26 - The left edge of the page is very dark. The title blurred. 29 - Title same as #9 40 - month was spelled out 41 - year was spelled out 62-68 - the u in Muller appears umlauted. 69-72 - Could be Kaul or Kaub 83 - This name looks most like Bingele, but could be Bingehe. 87 - The first letter is very light. It appears most like the right half of a "W"or and "N". The last letter at first glance looks like an "x", but looks like the "z" used in other words. The intervening letters could be m,n,u, o" or a closed "e". National Archives and Records Administration, Film M272, Reel 2, contains the quarterly abstracts of Passenger lists of vessels arriving at New Orleans Jan. 2, 1838 - Sept. 30, 1845. The names are transcribed in a very clear hand; and this name is written as Herz. In the luggage column there was only 2 T 94 - The letters could be n, u, a 111 - Last letter is separated from the name and is faint; it is probably n 115 - The last letter could be either t or d 120 - There is a line running diagonally through the surname. First 3 letters could be Pri and the final letter may be t or d 121 - This name was a ditto of # 121
National Archives and Records Administration, Film M259, Reel 16, List 19.
