(Written in) I also swear that Capt. Trudulle is at bamid (?) on board the Stmr. by ???ing (unreadable). So help me God. Trancriber's Notes:
* The numbering system is that of the original lister.
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder, not
the transcriber, or is used to call your attention to additional information
in the transcriber's notes.
* A ? indicates letter or letters which could not be read because of the quality of
the document.
* Lister placed title before each name. Transcriber changed for ease in
alphabetizing.
* It is interesting to note that Passenger 374 apparently was born on board and was
given the appropriate name of "France".
211-263. #211 begins a new page. The name, etc. is impossible to read due to
darkness of the copy. Due to deterioration of the page, Country of Origin is missing,
which had also been dittoed for the remainder of passengers on this page. Beverly
Mack Zanon, whose relatives were #232, 233, stated that they came from Germany.
From this, we can be reasonably certain that all of the passengers on this page
also came from Germany and we have listed them as such.
267-299 Pass. 267 begins a new page, which is deteriorated. One cannot read
name, age, country of origin, either because of deterioration or darkness of the copy.
The remaining passengers were dittoed for Place of Origin, but from the type of
names, we may assume these persons probably came from Italy, possibly
Switzerland. #267's name is just too dark to be read.
224 Age: 24 or 27.
245 Surname possibility: Krumeich.
251 Occ: Geometer, geometrician.
256 Surname possibility: Bar?dmann.
271 Surname possibility: Gotturua.
273 Surname possibilities: Tiegulia, Tugulia.
290 Surname possibility: Botha, Bolta.
306,309,312-315 Occ: Engineer.
321 Surname possibility: Landmeier.
328 Occ: No clear ditto to above. There is a note recorded at the end of this
entry: "Disappeared at sea during night of February 12".
341 Occ: Engineer.
349 Surname possibility: Glentzlen.
356 Surname possibility: Girault.
360 Occ: Generally the lister (who was French) gave the English equivalent
of an occupation if he knew it; otherwise, he would use the French or take
a guess at the English. In French Rentier is a person who invests & lives
off these investments. This is the only possibility I can offer.
365 Surname possibility: Moutarde
366-369 Surname: Accent aigu over "e".
374 This is the child who was born on the SS France and was 12 days old
on her arrival in U.S.
377 & 378 Occ: No entry at all.
Personal Note from Beverly Mack Zanon, July 23, 2002 (Re: Pass. 232 & 233)
BUSAM, M.F. Picture
Moritz F. Busam, and his brother, Francis Xavier Busam, gr-granduncles to me trekked
across the border into France and departed La Havre, France aboard this ship. They
left behind their parents, 8 siblings and 3 half-siblings. They were both listed as
farmers -- Moritz became a baker and Franz was a hostler. One brother, Wendel, and
a few cousins followed them to America later.
Franz (Frank) Xavier Busam was born March 15, 1859 in Nussbach, Baden, Germany,
son of Moritz Busam & Franziska Huber and died January 11, 1923 in Frankfort,
Franklin County, Kentucky. He married Helena Scheurer (daughter of Sebastian
Scheurer and Elisabeth (unknown)) on June 16, 1888 in Jeffersonville, Clark County,
Indiana at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Together they raised 11 children while
residing in Jeffersonville IN and Frankfort KY.
Moritz F. Busam was born January 31, 1861 in Nussbach, Baden, Germany, also the
son of Moritz Busam & Franziska Huber, and died June 9, 1922 in Frankfort, Franklin
County, Kentucky of diabetes. He married Frieda Zink 1885, daughter of Joseph Zink
and Sophia Herbstreit. Moritz returned to Nussbach a few times. He learned the bakery
trade in Frankfort. He was co-proprietor of the Frankfort Hotel, but eventually returned
to the bakery business and began his own prosperous business selling wholesale
bakers goods, confectioneries and toys. He also had a proprietorship in a saloon.
Frieda raised squab and chickens. Until they could make their own way, the Busam's
took boarders into their home. Moritz and Freda never had children.
