Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder, not
the transcriber, or is used to call your attention to additional information
in the transcriber's notes.
? The ? marks indicate letters or words that cannot be read due to the quality
of the original document.
* The Master's surname was clearly spelled Campell. On a later voyage of
S. S. Europa to New York, in the same year, the name was clearly spelled
Campbell.
* There was no column on the microfilm for Deaths on the voyage; there were no
comments indicating Deaths on the voyage.
* There was no column on the microfilm for Births on the voyage; there were no
comments indicating Births on the voyage.
* Regarding "The Country of which they intend to become inhabitants": all
passengers were listed as U. S., so the column has been eliminated.
* There were no separate listings for Cabin and/or Steerage.
* There were no numbers preceding each passenger's name. Numbering is simply
in the order of appearance on the microfilm.
* Sections in which no information was listed on the original manifest have
been left as such in this transcription.
* Surnames listed as beginning with "Mc" might all, in fact, have been written
as "M" followed by letter "C" (in superscript), or an apostrophe, or
similar character.
* Surnames beginning with "O" (such as ODonnell), did not include an
apostrophe in the entry. Most often there was significant spacing between
the "O" and the next letter; the transcriber has omitted that spacing.
* The original document included separate columns for ages in years and ages
in months. Ages followed by the letter "M" indicate Months; ages followed by
the letter "W" indicate Weeks.
* The S. S. Europa arrived in New York on April 29, 1872. The "New York
Maritime Register", April 17, 1872, makes no mention of its date of sailing
from Europe; nor is there a mention of it being due on a particular date.
It does, however, show that it is scheduled to sail out of New York on
May 4, 1872.
* The Declaration of Intent (To become a Citizen) for Passenger 355 contains
the entry "Londonderry" under "Whence He Emigrated". Thus, it might be
inferred that the ship stopped in Londonderry (Derry) to board the Irish
passengers.
* Many of the Irish surnames were deciphered with the aid of: "The Surnames of
Ireland", Edward McLysaght, Irish Academic Press, Dublin - Portland, Oregon
1999. (For example: in the original scribe's hand, "o" and "a" were
similar; "g" and "y" were similar; and "u" was similar to "n".
Passenger 446 could thus have been Pogue, Pague, Payue, Poyue, Poyne, or
PAYNE.)
* A few of the Irish given names were deciphered with reference to: "Irish
First Names", Julia Cresswell, HarperCollins Publishers, 1996.
318 - Given name could be "Hery" (Henry?); Surname could be Mullens
329 - Given name probably Fany; last letter has a descender
350 - Photograph of Gravestone of Fanny McCole states: "Died 1880 Age 56 years
Native of Ireland, Co. Donegal, Parish of Kincastlelough" (which is, in
fact, Kincasslagh).
351 - Given Name appears to be Nilce. Niece is listed, as he is part of the
transcriber's family, and the husband of Hannah, Passenger 352.
Placement of "ditto marks" seems to indicate Female. Placement of
"ditto marks" indicates Laborer, thus, more likely to be male.
355 - Given name appears to be "Petr". It should, in fact be "Patr"
(Patrick), as he is part of the transcriber's family.
416 - The questionable letter in the surname could be an "R"
417 - Given name could be "Alie" or "Alic" Questionable letter in Surname
could be "o" or "a"
431 - This passenger is not known to be related to passengers 349 through 358
There is a Peggy McCole in the 1851 census of Rasharkin, County Antrim;
this Peggy was 11 years old at the time.
441 - Surname is the only ODonnell where there appears to be an apostrophe
after the leading "O"; but it could be a mark on the film. For
consistency with all other instances, the apostrophe has been omitted.
450 - Occupation could be "Mill" washer
451 - Occupation could be "Mill" washer
482 - All of the questionable letters are half-height.
504 - Given name: First letter could be "F" or "T"; second letter could be "u"
or "d". It is possible this is an abbreviation for Frederick.
507 - Given name: First letter could be "F" or "T"; second letter could be "u"
or "d". It is possible this is an abbreviation for Frederick.
521 - Given name: First letter could be "F" or "T"; second letter could be "u"
or "d". It is possible this is an abbreviation for Frederick. Age was
obscured by a mark on the microfilm; second digit is probably "9".
538- Wm listed as given name, but listed as Female
The Transcriber's Family:
Daniel McCole (349) can be found in the 1880 Census of The Village of
Drifton, Luzerne, Pennsylvania. His children, Maggie (Margt: 353), John
(354), and Patrick (355) are there as well. Daniel's wife Fanny (350) died
in 1880. Nothing more is known of Mary (356).
Maggie married James O'Donnell. They were in Allentown, Lehigh, Pennsylvania
at the turn from the 19th to 20th century. Later, they settled in Lansford,
Carbon, Pennsylvania. Children: Daniel Regis, Frank Regis, James, Fannie,
John, Joseph Bernard, and Edward. Daniel Regis might never have lived in
Lansford; he has been found in Coaldale, Schuylkill, Pennsylvania; Bristol,
Bucks, Pennsylvania; and Allentown, Lehigh, Pennsylvania. Joseph Bernard,
and possibly his brother James, are reported to have moved to Detroit
Michigan.
John (354) married Bridget Gallagher; they had 12 children survive to
adulthood: Fanny, Patrick, Daniel, John, Winifred, Michael, Eugene, Anna,
Frank, Loretta, Joseph, and James. About 1907, the family moved from Luzerne
County to Bristol, Bucks, Pennsylvania. The transcriber is a great-grandson
of John and Bridget, via their son Daniel.
Patrick (355) married Margaret McNelis, and settled in Freeland, Luzerne,
Pennsylvania. Children: Frank Aloysius, Fannie, Sarah, Mary, and Patrick
Edward.
Niece McCole (351) appears in the 1880 Census of Foster Township, Luzerne,
Pennsylvania. His wife Hannah (352), children Daniel (357) and Catherine
(358) were there along with children John, Dennis, and Fanney. All except
Fanney survived to adulthood; they left Pennsylvania for the Elizabeth, New
Jersey area. Hannah (nee: O'Hara) has also been known as Hanorah.
The question remains as to exactly how Daniel (349) and Niece (351) were
related. Very thin clues imply that they were brothers.
There was still some contact between the descendants of John McCole and Niece
McCole until at least 1941. Daniel (357) came to John's funeral. By then,
Daniel had lost an eye in an industrial accident working for the Jersey
Central railroad. My father, James A. McCole, remembered that John's cousin
Daniel came to the funeral from New Jersey, and Daniel had a glass eye. It
was this small piece of family lore, and a chance encounter, that put the two
families back in contact in August of 2001.
