Ship Ernestine
NOVEMBER WINDS, 1851 - THE VOYAGE OF A FEW IMMIGRANTS WHO CAME TO CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY. SEVERAL WOULD BECOME MEMBERS OF THE HANOVER LUTHERAN CONGREGATION.
In the fall of 1851, 283 immigrants boarded the German ship, ERNESTINE. Most came with all their worldly possessions, and most would never see their German homeland again. They came with faith that the perilous voyage would be completed and they would arrive safely in a new country where greater opportunities existed for them and their children. Most were young families, a few came alone and a few brought an aged parent. The oldest immigrant was 69 and the youngest was 3 months. A 7 year old boy and a 2 year old girl died about halfway through the voyage and were placed overboard into the sea. There was no minister aboard.
The voyage took 2 months. A confirmation record shows that Wilhelm Krueger #98, was confirmed by special dispensation, so he could accompany his parents to America in mid-September 1951. Arrival in New Orleans was on 8 November 1851.
Our ancestors left little written about this voyage. Only notes in the margin of a prayer book tells of the lonliness of this ocean voyage, the fear of sinking, the meeting of a friend and the anticipation of arriving in a strange land.
A note scratched on a pine trunk lid tells of a second ship, the OLBERS, apparently was within view at times and arrived in New Orleans on the same day. It was not unusual for sailing ships to travel together. The OLBERS was the same ship which, in 1839, brought a part of the German Saxons who settled in Perry County. The OLBERS departed Bremen with 304 passengers. Another passenger manifest shows the Bark DIANA also arrived on 8 November.
One bit of family memory tells of how the movement of passengers about the deck was restricted so the balance of the ship was kept stable. With all the baggage secured deep within the ship, there was very little most passengers could do except sit and talk and play with the children. The Atlantic Ocean would be very stormy in October and November, so the southern route would be followed. Few captains would chance the North Atlantic after September due to the storms.
Two immigrant voyagers, Christian Loves Sr. (Lowes), and his family from Hanover and Heinrich Krueger Sr. and his family from Schlewecke, Brunswick, came from New Orleans to Cape Girardeau, arriving about mid November. Christian Loves Sr. spent a short time in Cape Girardeau, then bid his friends goodby, and with his family, traveled to northern Cape Girardeau County near Arnsberg. There he bought property and settled near the present I-55 highway, on a farm, on the right side going north, before the exit to Friedheim. His son Peter, later lived on the farm and it now belongs to a descendant, family named Zschille. The Heinrich Krueger Sr. family settled near the present Hanover Church on Perryville Road and built a house which in recent years, was owned by Henry Strack.
Frederick Krueger, the grandson of Heinrich Krueger Sr. #94, married Johanna Loves, the grand-daughter of Christian Loves Sr. #36 (Grandparents of Elroy F. Kinder)
Christian Niemeier #77, a young farmer, 23 years old, also settled on the Oriole Road north of Hanover. On 30 November 1851 he married Wilhelmine Krueger #96, at the Hanover Church, just 22 days after arriving in New Orleans and a short time after arriving in Cape Girardeau County (Great-grandparents of Agnes Foeste)
Christian Krueger #97, brother of Wilhelmine Krueger, married Wilhelmine #112, daughter of Gottlieb Muller #107. Wilhelm Krueger #98, Married Elizabeth Schrader on 20 September 1860 (Elizabeth was not a passenger on the ERNESTINE). (Wilhelm and Elizabeth were the great-grandparents of Joe and Helen Krueger of Cape Girardeau)
Additional research might reveal the beginning of these relationships on board the ERNESTINE certainly the ties of the homeland friendships contributed much to the choice of where to settle - neighbors, friends, and relatives linked together in a CHAIN MIGRATION that remains evident today.

Personal Notes
According to my relatives in the area, this document along with other key
pieces such as church records was thrown away sometime in the 1950's. Some
forward thinking janitor thought that maybe it was not such a good idea to
throw these things away thus they were retrieved. It is unclear to me whether
the church or library threw them away. I guess it doesn't matter.
Correspondence 10/30/02 passengers #224 & 225 Hannebrink, #248-251 Gerlach
Passengers #224 & 225 - Johann Hannebrink and Maria Hollenbeck respectively
were married and settled in St. Louis, Missouri for a time.
The Gerlach family (#248, 249, 250, 251) settled in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
There was a marriage between Otto Casper Hanebrink and Amelia Gerlach.
I am a Hanebrink doing research on our family lines since 1977. The Hannebrink's
in Cape Girardeau married into the Gerlach family. Most of the Hanebrinks came
into our country through New Orleans and I am attempting to locate all of their
entry dates and ship information. Maxine Linnenbom
Correspondence 11/14/02 passenger #283 Steffensmeyer
My g-g-grandfather is the Stephen Steffensmeier of this passenger list. According
to family legend, after coming to New Orleans, he traveled to Fort Madison, Iowa
on a barge. He awoke at night and accidentally walked off the edge of the barge
and fell into the Mississippi River. He could not swim but they pulled him back
onto the barge.
Stephen Steffensmeier was born January 4, 1832 in Verlar, Westfalen, Germany.
He lived in Lee County, Iowa after coming to the US at the age of 19. Stephen
died October 30, 1923 in St. Paul, Lee Co., Iowa. Jeanne Hill Butler
The Ernestine started life in 1834 as the American ship COLUMBUS. A history and sketch of the ship may be viewed at Michael Palmer's website.
