Transcriber's Notes:
* The use of an "*" indicates there is a note in this section pertaining to
that entry.
? The use of a "?" indicates a letter or word that can not be transcribed, and
an explanation is in this section pertaining to the entry. When possible,
the same number of "?" are used as the letters missing.
* The Deaths on the Passage column has been eliminated since no notations
appear in that column. There is no baggage column.
* This manifest is in poor shape, with many transcription blanks, including a
large portion of the first page. In addition to condition problems, there
are problems with the format and spelling the listmaker(s) used. It appears
there are two different handwritings on the list, making it harder to
compare letters in questioned words.
* Numbering to entry #74 is normal. At #74, there is passenger information
entered, then a squiggly line drawn through all the columns and the
remaining passenger numbers through the end of the list are heavily
overwritten, starting with another #74, which I designated #74(b)--see
further information at #74(a) note below.
* Given names are abbreviated in most entries, but not in any consistent
manner. All letters of the abbreviations are on the line, nothing is sub- or
super-scripted.
* Family group entries after the head of the family, usually have "do" or
squiggly lines in place of surname, occupation, country from and country to
columns, so if that information is not readable for the head of the family,
all the family's entries reflect that.
* Age column, listing is understood to be in years except for the few noted
with the months indicator, "mo".
* Sex column, the use of the words "men" for male and "fem" for female are
transcribed faithfully from the original. It is noted wherever an entry
appears to be in error on the original.
* Occupation column uses various spellings, they have been transcribed as
listed (butscher, cookess, servante)in the belief they are understandable.
* "Country to" column - the word "West" appears frequently. There is no
indication if that is an abbreviation of a specific destination, or if it
indicates that the individual is indeed "going west". Actually, since the
California Gold Rush was at its peak, "going west" might make sense.
* In the "country from" and "country to" columns, the location spellings have
been transcribed as shown on the original, but obviously spelling was a
problem. Examples: both "Baivarya" and "Bavarya" used for "Bavaria"; both
"Hassia" and "Hassea" used; and "Cinqinnati" used for "Cincinnati". Various
dukedoms, kingdoms, electorals, etc. are transcribed as listed. The two or
more people writing the list use different spellings and/or abbreviations.
* In the heading paragraph, the originally printed "New-York" has been crossed
through in both places and the word "Baltimore" handwriten above to change
the heading from: DISTRICT OF NEW-YORK--PORT OF NEW-YORK to: DISTRICT OF
BALTIMORE--PORT OF BALTIMORE as shown.
* In the sworn declaration, the words "New-York" has been crossed through and
the word "Baltimore" substituted. After "on board the" is a blank. After
the date, the signature can not be deciphered, and several words appear after
the signature that can't be read. After "burthen" nothing appears to have
been writen.
Passenger Notes:
# 1 - Faded, age and occupation can not be seen.
# 2 - Faded, occupation can not be seen.
# 3 - Faded, occupation can not be seen.
# 4 - Given name is very faint. Second, fifth, and last letters are tall.
# 5 - Surname very faint. Fifth letter is tall. Ending letters could also be
"our".
# 6 - Given name appears to be three letters and a period.
# 7-#13 - A family group, last name given only at #7, too light to read. As a
guess, may contain letters: B????ie?n.
# 14 - Given name could have several letters after the "c". Occupation can not
be seen. 15 Bottom of page, only partial given and surnames can be
seen. Age may be "18".
# 16 - Bottom of page, no entry can be seen.
# 19,#20,#21 - The Country From was spelled out "Grand Dukedom Hassia" on
original. It was abbrevated here for space reasons.
# 22 - Destination has a black smudge over most of the word. Missing letters
one short, rounded, two tall, and one that goes below the line.
Something like "ettg" or "olly".
# 31 - Although this child clearly is a member of the family listed in #25-#30,
the surname spelling was different for this entry.
# 33 - The destination has a black smudge over the first word. Second word is
clear "County".
# 36 - Given name abbreviation is either "Gos." or "Gof." Last name could also
be "Zolisig".
# 58 - Given name abbreviation appears to be "Hoh.", or "Floh.", first letter
definitely not a "J".
# 62 - Surname could also be "Stinnrauch", "Stiemrauch", or similar. The "S"
and "rauch" are clear.
# 64 - Given name abbreviation ("Wm")appears to be masculine, but sex listed
as feminine.
# 67 - Destination has a large dark shadow over the three or four letters after
the leading"R".
# 73 - Surname, there is a tall letter after the initial "B".
# 74(a) - See note in the General Comments above. Presumably, the original #74
did not board, but I am listing him in these passenger notes for the
information value to researchers. The line appears to read: "74. Conr.
Gloininger, 22, men, labourer, Prussia, Ohio".
# 75 - There is a large, very dark "X" marked between the name and age columns
for this passenger. No explanation of the "X" is made.
# 78 - No given name nor beginning of surname can be seen.
# 80 - Given name appears to take the space of three letters, only the "C" can
be seen. Surname could be "Tenthorst".
# 81 - Given name appears to be three or four letters, first letter could also
be a "T".
# 82 - Given name appears to be a two letter abbreviation which could be: "Tn",
"Jn", "Th", or "Jh".
# 86 - Given name has a clear "Ga" and "lle", but the 2-3 letters in between
are unclear. Perhaps the name is Gabrille, and has a definite period
after name as if it was abbreviated.
# 87 - Middle initial can not be seen.
# 88 - This name is extremely hard to read. It could start with an "He"
instead of "Str" as in "Heolnog". The last letter could be a "y"
instead of "g", as in "Strolnoy".
# 91 - Given name, first letter very light, it has a curlique at the top and
a slanted from right to left heavy down and up stroke. Comparable to
other "F", "T", "P", "V" on list. The second letter is a single
vertical line, perhaps an undotted "i" or part of another letter. The
"edr." is clear.
# 97 - Second initial could be a "G", "Z" or "Y" - unusual cap. letter that
goes below the line.
# 98 - Surname could also be "Hirnnus", Hiennus" or "Himnus" or similar.
#107-#108 - Destination was spelled out "Washington,D.C." on the original, but
it was abbreviated here for space considerations.
#136 - Surname could be "Helmkums", "Helmkuens" or "Hehnkums", "Hehnkuens".
#138 - Given name, first letter has a strong vertical long line but top can
not be seen, second letter is a strong vertical short line, third letter
could be a "c" or other circular letter, followed by "ra" or "ro". The
name could be "Licra" or something similar.
#139 - From the name, it can be presumed this is a female, instead of the "men"
as on the list. Also, appears to be traveling with child listed as #142,
see note at 142.
#142 - Originally, this entry was placed below entry #139 (and above entry
#140) and the passenger information is listed with no number. That
entry is then crossed out, and re-entered as number #142. Appears to be
traveling with entry #139.
#143 - Given name could be "Vom" or "Von" or similar. Age could be "27".
#145 - First word appears to be 3 letters the first of which is unreadable,
followed by possible letters "?an".
#149 - Given name, second initial could be a "G" or "Y". Age may start with a
"2", second number too light to read.
#150 - Given name initial unclear but could be an "A". The surname has a large
black flaw over it, but could be "Hrochtt" or "Hrachst". Also, the
destination is difficult to read due to large dark area over the bottom
of the word which could be "West".
#151 - Surname appears to have 2 letters before the clear "sing". Destination
can not be read due to large dark area in that section.
#152 - Destination can not be read due to large dark area in that section.
#153 - Given names, first initial could also be a "T" or "F", very light on
copy. Surname could start with "R" or "K" (Rither or Kither).
Destination can not be read due to large dark area in that section.
#159 - Surname could be "Cerdeo", but very light and this is just a guess.
Destination has a hooked line followed by "est". Presumably the "West"
that is in many other enteries.
#162 - Two initials for given name. Very light, second initial may be an "H".
#164 - Only an initial for given name. Very light with top and bottom
curliques, perhaps a "D" or "P".
