Transcriber's Notes:
Since no passengers died on this voyage, this coloumn was omitted.
Since all passengers intended to stay in the United States, this coloumn
was omitted as well.
A ? replaces a letter that could not be read.
A ^ shows that the following letter was superscripted on the manifest.
While the handwriting was very nice to look at, the m, n, u and e are not
always easy to distinguish from each other, they all look the same. The
capital M, N and U look the same as well.
The 9 in 1839 does not look like any other 9 in the manifest, it does not
look like a five either. In fact, it does not look like any other number
written by the captain. Since all his numbers look different and most of
the time he did the last letter or number with a "fancy" squiggle, the
transcriber has assumed that it is 1939 because that is where it is
listed on NARA microfilm.
Passenger Notes:
# 11: the occupation should probably be sailor
# 22 & 23: both occupations are covered with ink
# 44: the o is written with Umlaut
# 63: the first name could be e, the E and the C are very similar
# 83 & 84: it is not clear of the ditto marks are crossed out or
just not written very well. # 84 was definitely not a weaver, he
studied Theology in Germany before he left for the USA (see
Personal Note)
# 112: the 3rd letter in the first name could be a or u
# 122: the manifest clearly states male and farmer
# 139: the age is written as 3 1/2
# 140: the age is written as 1/2
# 150: the age on the manifest shows 2 1/2
# 154 - 156: ditto marks show farmer as occupation for these passengers
# 163: the age is written as 1/2
# 163 - 168: the u is u Umlaut
Personal Note:
# 84: H. Caspers war born as Hinrich Georg Anton Caspers in 1811 in Schleswig,
Germany. He studied Theology but did not finish. Not much is known in the
family after he immigrated to the USA. He served during the Mexican War,
I have a copy of his diary in my possession. At this time he called
himself Henry GA Caspers. Supposedly he also served during the American
Civil War, it is not known which side he fought on. The last letter to
Germany was in 1851. Supposedly he also took some family papers to the
US with him. Please contact the transcriber if you have any information.
