Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder, not
the transcriber, or is used to call your attention to additional information
in the transcriber's notes.
The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there appears to be a system of numbering the manifests. These numbers are
included in the identification of the film and reel numbers below.
There is no departure port entered on this manifest. She departed from Hong Kong with
Chinese passengers, arriving at San Francisco on May 17, 1893; July 26, 1893;
October 4, 1893; February 23, 1894; April 28, 1894; and July 6, 1894. This arrival fits
into the timing of a round trip to Asia. It seems likely that this trip also departed
from Hong Kong.
For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger and which is stamped over whatever
information has been entered in the columns.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1893 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case Grant). Many of these passengers have a place name written under
the stamp. Where a blank is transcribed in this column no place has been written in. Where
there is a question mark the entry is illegible. There are no entries for passengers bound
for ports beyond San Francisco.
Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were probably
allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives should have
a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).
For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)
The following columns had no entries and are not included in the table:
Height
Complexion
Color of Eyes
Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification
Occupation is universally recorded as Merchant or Grocer because following the Chinese
Exclusion Act of May 6, 1882 admission was denied to all Chinese except laborers already
in the US and "students, teachers, merchants or those proceeding to the United States from
curiosity." Passengers 2-44 have Merchant written for passenger 2 and ditto marks for
the rest. Passengers 45-86 are similarly described as "Grocer."
Champerico is in Guatemala on the Pacific coast.
1 Is "with her son No 916."
3 Is with her husband No 916."
4-5 Are "with his brother."
1-6 are Saloon Passengers.
35 Is female. There is a note: "To join her husband Chong Sam Lai Po Tai Shop Washington."
40 Has a note: "with her husband No 45 Tong Yip, Sang Wo Sang Jackson St."
60 Has a note: "with her husband No 7 Lam Chan Kue Lang Dupont St."
79 Has a note: "with his cousin No 2?."
