Transcriber's Notes:
* The use of an * calls attention to additional information or possible
misspelling.
? The use of a ? indicates a word or letters that could not be read, due to
quality of original document.
* A page preceeds the sworn statement on the National Archives film. It
states, "3 April 1848 Ship Carna??? Liverpool". The ship name may be
Carnalie, Carnatia or Carnatie, as the "l" appears to be crossed
like a "t". Family Archive Viewer, CD358 Passenger Lists: New Orleans,
1820-1850 lists the ship as "Carnalie". The "Report and List of
Passengers" section seems to be clearly written as the "Ship Carnalie"
of "Boston".
* In the upper-right margin on the first page of the "List of Passengers" is
one or two words that may have been written at a later point in time. It
appears to read "Nahsaifrater or Kahsaifraler" and appears to be in a
different handwritting.
* Blank List of Passengers printed by Thomas Groom & Co Stationers, 82 State
Street, Boston
* Three additional columns exists on the List of Passengers. They represent:
Country to which they severally belong, Country of which they intend to
become inhabitants and Remarks relative to any that may have died, or
otherwise left the vessel during the voyage. Written vertically in the
nationality column is, "England and Ireland", and in country of
immigration is written, "United States of America". There are no deaths
during the voyage listed in the last column, therefore the column has been
eliminated.
* Of the surnames represented on the Ship Carnalie, including dual origins
for some, about 54% are of Irish origin, 28% are of English origin, 16% are
of Scottish origin, and I think one name is of Welsh origin, that being
McPhillips.
Passenger Notes:
# 4 - Phrenologists divined a person's character based on the bumps on his
head.
# 18 - Mechanics could be manual labourers working at a trade, or someone using
machinery to produce goods, e.g. frame-work knitter, spinner, weaver
etc.
# 60 - There is a check mark in the age column. Tinmen were tinsmiths or
tinkers, i.e. traveling repairmen.
# 66 - This surname could be a mispelling of Keiffe or Keefe.
# 77 - The second number of the age appears to be a zero, possibly a 9.
# 83 - There is a check mark following his first name.
# 90 - Middle initial may be J or S.
# 94 - A scavenger was a person employed by the parish to clean the streets.
# 98 - A lumper could be either a dock worker or a fine-grain saltmaker.
# 99 - Surname may be Lima, Lirna, Lussa or Luna. No letters appear to go above
or below the others.
#121 - Bracketed with Ann Devine, and a line drawn to the far right where the
following note appears: "Secreted themselves on board without the
knowledge of the officers or crew."
#122 - Bracketed with Edward Welsh, and a line drawn to the far right where the
following note appears: "Secreted themselves on board without the
knowledge of the officers or crew."
