Correspondence 11/10/02 passengers #472-476 Riha
Passengers, 472-476 were the Riha family
including Thomas (father), Maria (mother), Joseph (my great grandfather),
Johann, and Franziska, who was recorded as Franz probably do to the fact
that she was six months old at the time.

Maria's maiden name was Chlodova. I believe the Riha family first settled
in the Chicago area as was indicated on the manifest, because as of the
summer of 1870 when a census was taken in Wisconsin they weren't on it at
all. In October of 1870 Thomas purchased the family farm on Rosebud Road,
in Pierce Township, Kewaunee County, WI. Both Thomas and Maria were
illiterate, signing the papers for the sale of the farm with an X. Early in
1877 Thomas passed away and Joseph (my great grandfather) and his wife Marie
(Mifka) bought the farm in an estate sale from Joseph's mother Maria,
brother Johann, and sisters Franziska and Mary. Mary was the first Riha
born from our family in the U.S. I believe she was born sometime in 1868.
Joseph married Marie Mifka on Jan. 31,1874. They had six children,
Elizabeth (Lizzie), Mary, Frank (my grandfather), Tillie, Ruzenka and Emma.

Ruzenka died Nov. 3,1899 of diphtheria. Emma remained a spinster. After
Marie's death in 1909, Joseph remained on the family farm until 1927 when
he, Emma and granddaughter Rose Riha (my aunt) moved to the town of Kewaunee
until his death on Feb.8, 1937. Joseph was active in his community during
his life, being a charter member of the Weisner Free Thinker Cemetery Board,
and the founding member of the Slovan, WI Z.C.B.J association. Joseph
officially became a U.S. citizen on Oct. 19, 1891, twenty-five years after
his immigration. Joseph, wife Marie, daughter Ruzenka and grandson Edward
(Eddie) Zlab, Mary (Riha) and Wenzel Zlab's son, are buried at the Free
Thinker Cemetery in Alaska, WI not far from the family farm. I'm not sure
at this point when Maria (Chlodova) Riha died, and only know that Franziska
Riha married a man with the last name Koranek, sister Mary married a man
named Dedic and I have no clue what happened to Johann Riha. Their names,
appear on the abstract papers for the farm when Joseph had finished paying
off the mortgage on May 11, 1891.

The other manifest that pertains to my family is the Bark Gauss
The Mifka's settled in the Casco/Slovan area of Kewaunee County, WI. On
Jan. 31,1874 Marie married my great grandfather, Joseph Riha, they bought
the Riha family farm, after Joseph's father Thomas Riha died in 1877.
Joseph and Marie had six children together, Elizabeth (Lizzie), Mary, Frank,
Tillie, Ruzenka, and Emma. Their son, Frank was my grandfather. Marie's
younger brother, Anton married Anna Kipp on Oct. 23, 1880. The only
child of Anton and Anna that I could find a record of was of a daughter
Pauline, born at 10:00 A.M. on Nov.17, 1891. I'm sure, judging by their
marriage date, that Pauline had had older siblings. Both Anton Mifka
and my great grandfather Joseph Riha were charter members of the Wiesner
Free Thinker Cemetery Board, Anton being the president. Marie's father
Frank Mifka died in Kewaunee County on June 8, 1899. Marie was born
Aug. 4, 1853 in Bohemia and died Nov.14, 1909 on the Riha family farm in
Kewaunee County. I don't know what happened to her sister Ottillia (Tillie)
besides from the fact that she married a man named Frank Tesar. Their
youngest sister must have died fairly young. The first time that I saw
anything on her existence was from the ship's manifest. Needless to say,
my family was rather surprised.
