Correspondence 02/10/2003 passengers #139-146 Mude/Winter?
I believe I found some of my ancestors on the passenger list for Ship
Alfred - 1839. Passengers #139-146. I believe the Mude passengers
should be:
139 Michael Winter 56 m
140 Christiane Winter 45 f
141 Wilhelmine Winter 23 f
142 Louisa Winter 20 f
143 Friedrich Winter 18 m
144 Martin Winter 16 m
145 Michael Winter 14 m
146 Johanna Winter 12 f
Source is William Iwan's book "Old Lutheran Emigration of the mid-19th
Century", 1943. There are no Mude's listed in Iwan's book.

ISTG Note - To the transcribing member of ISTG the surname for passengers
#139-146 is written on the original manifest as Mude. The coincidence of
names and ages of the Winter family cannot be denied. However, we transcribe
what we see on the original and will leave it up to researchers to
determine the actual name of the family listed. ISTG Staff

America, landing in New York on the 7th of September, after a very stormy
voyage of nine weeks and three days. They sailed from Hamburg, by way of
Hull and Liverpool, and on reaching New York went to Buffalo,...."
Correspondence 07/28/2003 passengers #112-117 & #152-161 Kurush [Knuth]
I believe the surname should be KNUTH. The initials all match my information
except for passenger # 157 and # 161.

Knuth and Ernst Ludwig Gottfried Knuth. Iwan indicates these nine Knuths

Correspondence 08/26/2004 Passenger #41 Pritzlaff
Passenger #41 C. Pritzlaff is an "Old Lutheran" emigrant who's full name is
Johann Carl Wilhelm Pritzlaff. After immigrating Mr. Pritzlaff spent a few years
working in the States of New York and Pennsylvania before continuing on to
Milwaukee, WI. He started working in the hardware business there and eventually
owned his own store called "John Pritzlaff and Company" and renamed later "John
Pritzlaff Hardware Company" - the company kept growing until it became the largest
hardware store in Milwaukee and then in the entire Midwest. John wrote a number
of letters to his family when he was in Hamburg and then when he was in the USA.
Five of these letters survived and copies are currently available to researchers.
The original letters were written in German but have been translated and published
in the book "Freistadt and the Lutheran Immigration", Freistadt Historical Society, 1998
Reprint. I have extracted the following details from these letters:
16 or 17 May 1839 - Journey began as he said farewell to friends and family
[Note: Pritzlaff was living in Trieglaff, Kreis Greifenberg, Pommern, Kingdom of
Prussia before his departure]
30 May 1839 - 14 days after he left home, he arrived safely in Hamburg
30 Jun 1839 - Waited a full month for fellow countrymen and church members who
had to stay in Stettin, because of passport problems
01 Jul 1839 - Departed Hamburg by steamship traveling to England
04 Jul 1839 - After 3 1/2 days landed in Newcastle where we spent an additional 3 days
07 Jul 1839 - Road by train to Carlisle and from there by steamship to Liverpool.
From here we boarded the large 3 masted sailing ship, Alfred
11 Jul 1839 - Began the journey across the sea
06 Sep 1839 - Arrived in New York Harbor (the passenger list is dated 05 Sep 1839)
Unknown - Depart for Albany, NY via steamship
Unknown - Arrived in Albany, NY
Unknown - Departed for Buffalo, NY traveling there partly by train and partly by
canal boats
Unknown - Arrived in Buffalo, NY

The National Archives microfilmed manifest for this ship is not a microfilm of the original manifest but rather a hand copy of the original list. The National Archives substituted a copy because the original was missing or was illegible. This may have introduced an additional source of transcription errors.
