Contributor's family passenger #41 Elizabeth Wood Jan Strand
My grandmother Elizabeth Wood Bulman left England on board the Tunisian in
June 1910. She was immigrating to Canada with her father John William Wood.
Elizabeth was only 19 years old, and I feel that time has come full circle.
I immigrated to my grandmother's home land when I was 19 years old.
Today, intercontinental travel is an everyday fact of life, something that
we take for granted. That wasn't so in 1910. Even though travel is easier
now, I can understand the thoughts and feelings that Elizabeth and William
experienced. Leaving one's homeland can be a sad experience, tempered with
great excitement at the prospect of new adventures - particularly when
you're only 19!
Many of Elizabeth and William's fellow passengers were English orphans,
seeking a new life with Canadian families. Undoubtedly many were frightened
or anxious. I hope this passenger list is a fitting memorial, one that other
genealogists will find a useful link to the past.
