SS Tunisian

Liverpool, England to Quebec, Canada
30 April 1908

Subject: 1908 SS Tunisian LIVERPOOL TO QUEBEC -
Unaccompanied British Home Children

Based on the sailing of 1909, families with children are apparently shown together and BHC's (British Home Children) as Unaccompanied Children.

The Tunisian seemed to be the primary carrier of British Home Children making as many as 8 to 10 trips per year.
Four adults were on this voyage, and are listed below in columns which
represent Ticket #, Name, Occupation, Sex, and Age:

Tkt # 13049: Mrs. WHITTLE Wife Female 12+
 Tkt # 13050: E B FALKANS Lab Male 12+
Tkt # 13051: Ernest ROBINSON Lab Male 12+

All 134 Children boarded at Liverpool and debarked at Quebec,
the only port of call in Canada for this voyage.

Information only shows Contract Ticket Number, Name, Sex, Adult 12

Correspondence 03/31/2005 passenger Graves
My Father, John Graves, was a Home Child, born on the Isle of Wight who
sailed to Canada aboard the SS Tunisian, departing Liverpool on April 30,
1908 and arriving in Quebec on May 9, 1908. He was sent to Canada by the
Catholic Emigration Society and under the supervision of St. Georges Home,
Ottawa and was placed on a Quebec farm shortly after arriving. He served in
the Canadian Armed Forces in WWI, lost an eye in combat in France and
returned to Ottawa where he worked for CNN while attending Univ.of Toronto
where he received his DDS in 1929 and moved to Detroit, Mich. to set up his
practice.

He married Dorothy (nee Ferry?) in Detroit in 1934 and raised 5 children:
Mary Josephine(1935), Mary Joselyn(1935), John(1936), Thomas(1938) and
Judith(1939). He died in December, 1974.

Any direction/references to additional sources of information on the Home
Child Program, my Father's ancestors and/or relatives, etc. would be greatly
appreciated. Tom Graves
